Serious Lighting Problems

And anyone know of any go indies in Somerset/ Wiltshire?

Excuse my ignorance but what is CAN?

And anyone know of any go indies in Somerset/ Wiltshire?

A Can BUS is a High speed data system,, sometimes one of the SAM that's signal acquisition modules goes faulty making the electrics do funny odd things.

Cornerstone do work for my local,, do check that they can do a STAR or the equivalent test.

Just re confirming every thing said,, I think that the lamp warning came on,, you changed som bulbs and the lamp stayed on,, the fault went away and came back

One of my tail lamp bulbs or holders isn't quite perfect so every now and then I get a bulb failure on the dash, if I give the tail lamp some "percussive maintenance" then it works fine. This is usually done in front of a small audience as the humour factor while stating something about "German build-quality" is quite high.

That said, I had a dual-filament bulb that burned out one filament but the broken filament was resting on the other or something so other lights went a bit strange - this had me foxed for a short while!

Additionally the W208 is pretty old-school and doesn't have much in the way of CAN in it, I would imagine the first place to look is always the bulbs, especially if they have been recently changed. Just try swapping them left/right! :)

The fault is odd though for a faulty bulb something would have to be on to have started it all. the stop / tail is a double filament bulb on a 208. the pins are off set and they are very hard to get them in wrong

I know that a SAM can put out number plate lights.

This is why I added above "what were the original problem" Some bits are not very clear

The story so far...

Lamp warning came on.....

Changed offside - outside tail light (Double filament)

Lamp warning came on.....

Changed offside inside tail light (single filament)

Everything okay

Lamp warning came on... When breaking the front offside sidelight comes on and with the lights switched on the brake lights stay on permanently.

Did nothing... Everything okay.

Did nothing... Everything okay.

Currently everything is okay and now i'm waiting for all the lights to come back on.

I'm very confused and getting a little peeved....

I'm going to try some better quality replacement bulbs and see how I get on.

You have answered it I think,, if the base of the double flament lamp that you changed was faulty or not quite in, then it would be possible for the brake lights to turn on the side lamp, on that side,,it could have had an intermitant short (Shude)or some stray solder or too large solder pad

If you replace just that double filament one your troubles will go away

My diagnosis
Replacing the rear offside bulb has caused the brake light contact to be connected to the sidelight contact.
This means that when sidelights are turned on, both brakelights come on as brakelights are connected together.
When you brake, the offside front sidelight comes on as the brakelight is now feeding the sidelight circuit. Both front sidelights do not come on because when sidelight switch is in the off position, left and right side lights are on two seperate circuits (That is why you can switch left or right sidelights on for parking. The offside rear light is also actually on when you brake, but is masked by the brakelight.

SO
You have either fitted a faulty bulb that has a short between side and brake light contact.
Or you have managed to bridge the contacts in the bulb holder by fitting the bulb incorrectly.

Easy job...... :-)

I think I've just pretty much repeated Malcom's diagnosis there!

Some days forums can be funny things,, when I first came onto this thread I had been dealing with a car where the SAM tried to turn on some lamps on the rear and ones brain over looks the obvious and you go in too deep.

I find i can get around that by switching my brain off.

Back on topic, 99.999% its the bulbs.

OK my Dads W210 had a very similar issue.

It turned out the bulb was not quite seated properly in the holder. Just make sure that all the contacts are clean, and you reseat it properly.

Worth a try.

Problem Solved!!!!!

Faulty bulb.. Went to halfords and took out brake light bulb... Had a quick look and it would appear that the two filiments had been soldered together.. Dohhh

Cheers for all the help guys.
