Interesting. I can give a useful comparison with the basic pay of an MP.

I have had the same job for thirty four years (BBC engineer, so sort of public sector when it suited those in power). Twenty years ago my basic pay was just about the same as an MP's basic pay. Now my basic pay is less than half that of an MP. Despite all their bleating they haven't done too badly.

That's the benefit they forget when it comes to how much they'd like to pay themselves, and what percentage increase they'll give themselves each year.

This is humour, right?

They don't realise that these are meant to be out of pocket expenses incurred in the line of duty.

Pay for his standard ticket, let him pay the extra for first class if he sees fit. Ask the MPs why standard class isn't good enough- they tell us it's top quality when it suits them & suggest we should all use it.
