I was wondering if anyone has any ideas. My sky+ box is developing a habit of just shutting down. For no reason it freezes and then goes into standby. To make it work I have to power down - wait 60 seconds and then start it - then it works for a while.

Is it dying? Or is there something I can do to alleviate this?

Thanks in advance ..

That's what mine did before the HD failed. When that happened the box failed to come off "red-light". You can fit a new HD easily enough; assume the box is out of warranty?

It's a new save the planet thing.
Go into Services then select Sky + Set up and set the 'Auto Standby' option to OFF to increase your carbon footprint.

You could try a reset update but I dont think that it will solve it, if its one of the old grundigs, then dont do it as it will store the fault permanently

First go to sevices, then 4 , then 6 and look at the signal strength and quality. alot of Amstrads and early Pace 2000/2500 have bad tuners

Mains plug out, hold down back up on front, wait till it says updating, then leave it for ten mins

I think Nibbo has made an excellent point and the easiest to check out. I believe this happens if we do not press a button for a set period of time and yes I have switched off that 'option'

Also look for help on Digital Spy. Excellent forums.

Only un plugging can unfreeze.

95% of the circuits run in stby

Yes, I agree

It's just crockers is saying the box freezes - if it's the auto-off then the box shouldn't freeze? It should just 'switch-off'! And switch back on again as required; not go through the unplugging routine, that's a sign of a bigger issue.

I bought 5 last week from the re cycling center, they cost me £1 each.

3 worked and almost new :D , 2 scrap so I waisted my money

I must take more care the next time I guy

Thanks -

Thanks guys - I have now turned off auto standby and have done as Malcolm suggested - turned on whilst holding Backup - will now try and see if this has sorted out the problem

When you do this correctly the message says "updating do not turn off "

You do need a 50% signal and quality less than this and this can cause pixelating if its worse on some ch than others then the dish could be a tad out of line giving a problem on the V or H channels respectivly

I would prefer to boil myself in my own urine rather than give Rupert Murdoch any of my hard earned cash!

One of the joys of living in a democracy..........freedom of choice.:)

If it happens again and is out of warranty call sky with your prob and they will fob you off by trying to get you to pay for an engineer to come out, at that stage tell them you want to cancel sky, they soon change attitude and send a bloke out free of charge...trust me Ive done it 3 times,

There is an installers page, 0, can't remember which combo of remote buttons you press to get to it but this allows you to defrag the HDD. This is what cured my + functionality freezing. You can also reformat the HDD using a combo of facia buttons after unplugging but you will, of course, lose all your saved programmes.
However, I have also had 7 boxes since I first signed up!

My good friend in Herts has just bought a helicopter for £1m, so not short of cash, but when his sky box went down he did what you did and they fixed it free
