SL 500 suspension, is this normal ?

As soon as the car is remotely unlocked in the morning I hear a pump of some type spring in to action (before the car is started).

Also at various stages during journeys ?

Yes they do if they are a 230 chassis.

Does it sounds like the central locking vacuum pump, in the boot on the right hand side ?
If you have a leak this could cause the pump to go into action from time to time
be careful - they're expensive to replace !

If anything it sounds as though it is coming from the front off side (right)

Yes, pretty much. They always seem to make some noise. Some more than others apparently...
