Sorry in advance for the long post.

95 SL500, twin cam engine (119?) with twin distibutors. Ever since I've had this car the temp varies between 90 degrees and close to a 100 degrees.

So far I've flushed the rad (twice) re-filled with Bluecol antifreeze in a strong mix, replaced the thermostat as it used to take an age to warm up (now cured) and replaced the viscous coupling on the fan as the old one was definitely fubar as you could stop it with one finger and no damage to that finger!

It will sit and tickover at 90 degrees all day but as soon as you ask it to do a bit of work the temp goes up to 95 - 98. It never quite gets to a 100 degrees and cools down as soon as you cruise or go down the hill you've just gone up.

The rad feels cool, while the top hose feels really hot. Also the hoses never seem to get as solid as 20 psi would seem to suggest they should.

It does not lose water or overheat, the heater works perfectly.

The fan appears to be a long way away from the rad - problem?

I'm thinking that the water pump is u/s? I've just got on the phone to my trusted local chap to get me a price to replace it but do you think this could be the fault?

Sick of spending money and this is really begining to worry me as one day it is going to overheat and that will cause damage.

Any help much appreciated,

Dave.

Further, could the timing be out? I thought with modern(ish) engines the timing was controlled by the ecu?

Or, should I be running this car on super unleaded - would this cause these symptoms?

The car runs really well, goes like a rocket and while it's horrendous on petrol, not as bad as I thought it would be.
