Its supposed to be a easy repair??????
with the state thats in it probably cost you less to buy a straight SL55. maybe this one......

rear drivers panels roof boot rear windscreen door and wing...... the insurance didnt right it off for nothing.... amazing how the place is plying it down... not to mention the electrics.........

Thats probably a £8k repair with the parts and labour.

Why would you fit used parts to car like this? I know I wouldn't - especially the Vario roof.

My figure was based on an approved MB repairer using new parts.

or just buy unrecorded one on autotrader

search on autotrader sl upto 5 year old. there is amg for 29.500

It's a fairly easy repair, but what's it going to be worth once repaired and presumably recorded?

Possibly less than £36k...

It should be around £20-£25k really.....

dont look easy to me, ive looked at my roof on the 129 and the new sl is far more complicated with the hard top mechanism.

The cheapest SL55 is still the wrong side of 35K, I agree that in the right hands someone could fix this relatively cheaply..but the price is too high to start with.

Also

What happends when you want to insure it being a Cat D and when you come to sell it?

Think I would just walk away

If any one has access to WIS take a peep at the boot lid when it is all 9ft off the ground in the service position, these things are set up so that the clearance from the boot to the left hand rear light is 1mm.

I have just studied this for a guy where the boot touched the rear light, he took it to the dealer who just moved the stop,no cure but better. If your time is free and you have a couple of years to sort it OK

Thing that puzzles me the most is that if its LEAGALLY fully repairable why was it not done by the insurance. If the insurance have refused it then must be for a reason ?

Its cost and time Gupz, if the insurance cant justify the cost and time spent on repair they will right it off. Its all about the £££££

I had a feeling thats the reason seems like a waste though, 'IF' it was repairable it should have been and then sold, could have sold for a bit more although its price smashed is very high as it is !

When the repair gets near 50% of the value the insures write it off.

Someone will think that it is an easy repair, and I have done some in my time, but having an SL this one never

Because using new MB parts at retail and a bodyshop charging insurance rates makes it an uneconomic repair.
