Central locking and soft close boot working intermittently. Have tried usual removal of PSE pump, unit seems dry, checked and replaced fuses etc. If I unplug and reconnect the PSE pump I can get the system to work for a few days, and then fails again. Replacement pump time? I don't really want to risk the cost of the pump if it may be some other cause. Thanks guys!

Have you opened up the pump?
Try drying it out with a hairdryer.
Also, check that water isn't still in the harness and running down.
And last of all, on a warm day, take out the boot floor and let the boot dry out fully. Then clear out the drains.

Hi Ted

Yes removed pump, took apart and no obvious signs of water damage. Also had a TV repair guy scan over the board for any obvious malfunctions, but seemed ok. Out of interest, as the system has now failed with the boot not fully closed, are you aware of any way to manually close the boot to it's fully shut position so I can use the roof etc?

Hi guys, did you sort this in the end? mines gone on my W208. boot light stays on and used to open but now wont and although central locking thankfully still works it doesnt blink the lights on close but does on open.. i believe on the SL its a £700 part, on mine its only a mere £550 lol.. luckily ive just signed up with a 3 year warranty deal for £349 and the pump is covered so im going to abuse the rights of that when the paperwork comes through this week... mildly annoying not having access to the boot mind!

I had two of these fail on my SL55, bloody expensive:doh:, fortunatley one was replaced under warranty after a battle with my dealer. The failure of the PSE is genrally due to either water ingress (SL boot leaks are common and the PSE is ideally located to catch the water!!) and/or leaks in the air system which forces the PSE to work longer and harder and then ultimately fail. The SL55 has lots of potential for air leaks, the seats are the main culprit in my experience.

When mine was stuffed I had to use the manual key to open the boot, the bottom line is that the if the PSE is stuffed you need to replace it, I tried taking it to bits all to no avail. I would however recomend that you make sure you have no leaks, you can get a good idea if you hear the pump running more than it should. Normally it kicks in when you switch on the ignition but should stop fairly quickly, if it continues to run then you should investigate for leaks.

I hope that helps.

My last one failed due to the compressor rotor self destructing - it was bone dry and about 2.5 years old. The rotor was actually in two pieces

and no, of course you can't buy the rotor separately 'cos MB have handcuffed Hella (who make it)

That failure may well point to it running unnecessarily for long periods if you have leaks. The PSE is probably designed for a fairly low duty cycle, if it's worked hard then it will have a shorter life - just like yours!! I assume you have all the fancy massge options (comfort seats) plus all the other pneumatic supports, this is where the leaks occur - at least the pipework under the seat is the common area for leaks.

some great info thanks guys, my warranty came through this morning so im going to get it sorted under that fingers crossed.. a guy contacted me from myvehiclewarranty.co.uk free upgrade to Silver cover which covers central locking units and chargers etc etc.. 3 years £349 all in for the 3 years not per year.. even for this one job alone its worth it! fingers crossed it pulls of cos it covers up to £60 per hour in labour too and at any garage so thats cool.

Great info, thanks to your posts, I've decided that my PSE is definitely shot and needs replacement. My parking lights won't shut off and the BAS/ASR dash light stays on as well.

Does anyone know what all the PSE controls? Also, what is the BAS/ASR?

Autotek Electronics rebuild the pump. They're at www.autotekelctronics.com
I just found them on the Internet and have messaged them just now, as my SL55's pump is deceased.
