Without knowing the VIN I can't be sure, but yes - certainly looks the same.

Flash,

What spec are you having on the W221?

Hi mate,

AMG bodkit, alloys, are a must and are on top of my list of options but I have not yet decided on rest of the spec and if all goes well then Sept delivery BUT am a little worried in case car is problematic as will be a new model etc. but what the hell I am going to byte the bullet and take a chance... :)

it will have the lovely new 5.4 liter 388hp V8 ...

I am waiting for that to appear in the CLS  .. a sort of budget AMG!

I think that's part of the problem. The series one SL60s are probably the least popular - they look very dated.

There is a white R107 SL with an AMG bodykit that Peter Jarvis has had for as long as I can remember. Some cars just won't sell.

I keep getting sooo tempted to surprise 'She that must be obeyed'

SL's look fantastic, the bigger engined one's even sound fantastic.

My 5 litre V8 one doesn't really, it's very quiet and refined. But that does make it an extremely relaxing long distance car. I still might change the rear box one day, problem is I prefer OEM parts and the AMG accessory one is around £1200 (yes, just for a back box ) ... when available!

Bill there were a couple of AMG rear boxes (NOS) on eBay in Germany recently. I bid to £350 - sold for 700 Euros I think.

I understand where your coming from, I'm definitely NOT into loud.... The AMG just makes a noise that I can best describe as mega grin factor.

The price of the rear box sounds crazy, does that include all the exhaust tailpipes? (plus engine :) ??)

John

I don't think there are - one of those is rectangular - possibly for an SL60? This one would definitely fit yours, but not cars from '99 model year on.

Will soon find out :)

I looked up the fitting procedure in WIS before bidding. The AMG accessory back box bolts straight on to pre-facelift R129s, but later cars have a one-piece mid/rear exhaust system.

So fitting involves dropping this section, sawing off the rear box, and attaching the AMG one via an adapter pipe.

Assuming I don't get this adapter pipe supplied with the box, does anyone know if this part can be ordered (as an AMG accessory, presumably)? I couldn't find it mentioned in EPC or the Price List.

If not then I guess an exhaust specialist could make it up fairly easily.

You can buy it pre-made for £75 from SuperSprint - though what I would do it go to Longlife exhausts or similar and get them to fabricate something and fit it all for you.

Will be very interested to hear the difference!

Great info. - thanks.

Yup that's the plan (to get it done somewhere, rather than DIY).

Speaking of noise ... since the whole exhaust rear of the cats. has to come off anyway, one option would be to have a straight-through replacement pipe fabricated (instead of just the adapter piece to go from the middle box)

But I think that might be a bit OTT, sound-wise! I do use the car for long trips, so am only looking for a little more exhaust note :)

Plus having gone to the trouble of getting a genuine AMG box it'd be nice to keep the spec. fully M-B.

Are longlife exhausts any noiser than oem?

Thanks for any answer,

John

Generally yes as they are simple stainless steel fabrications with fewer baffles. I'm not recommending them by the way, Hayward & Scott are far better, but for a simple job that Bill needs they'd be fine.
