Hi all I had four new tyres fitted today and it turns out all four wheels are very slightly out of true. No enough to prevent them being balanced but out of true all the same.

The fitter suggested I took them to my local wheel place where they can true them up easily enough but told me to tell them to be careful with the TPMS valves.

The owner told me not to bother as they were easy to balance and were therefore perfectly functional.

I'm going to get them refurbed later this year so could could just wait till then and get it all done at the same time.

OR

As I'm off to France in a couple of weeks I could just get them straightened now and hope they don't snap one of my valves in the process.

What would you do?

I am not sure.

I am currently battling against damaged Mercedes wheels.

I buckled one really bad and got it straightened [good enough for a spare]

The replacement i then got for that buckled one subsequently cracked.

So i re-instated the straightened one.

Now the straightened one is leaking air 🤣

I actually give up now

If they drive alright and balance up okay i would just leave them as will happen again in no time with the state of the roads

It's incidents like this where my finest man maths kicks in and it's simply an excuse to shop for a new set of wheels.

My front nearside was slightly buckled for around 2 years, never leaked air or caused a wobble on the steering wheel, finally had it straightened when it needed a new tyre.
I think most tyre fitters know about TPMS valves so it won't be an issue.

Thanks all, reassuring to hear that everyone says leave them for now or buy a new set for £2,880 :)

I'll take it for a quick squirt up the M1 to double check for any vibration - but, thinking about it, it wasn't vibrating before so doubt it will be now.

Meanwhile, I'm happy to have new tyres with maximum tread. I've driven though some huge downpours on the French Atlantic coast. When it rains it can really tip it down. Off there soon.

I don’t think it would cost that much to get them straightened. Obviously easier combined with a refurb but if you’re leaving in two weeks then I’d wait until you get back. Wheel refurb places are usually busy in the spring/summer anyway.

No real need to worry about the TPMS valves, the wheel specialists deal with these on a daily basis.

Two of my front wheels were slightly buckled. It was enough to cause vibration at high speed regardless of balancing. Mercedes replaced the wheels as they sold the car with the wheels buckled.

If you are planning on motorway journeys at speed I would recommend having them fixed.....running a wheel that is not true is not ideal at speed.

Also I doubt if it would do your new tryes much good if the wheels are are not running true.

I took it up the M1 to Scratchwood and back and there seemed to be a very slight judder at 80-ish. Or it could have been the crap surfacing on that part of the road......

Anyway, rather than risk it on a trip to France and back, I'll take it round to First Aid Wheels in West Hampstead first thing this morning and get them done.

Sorted. All four wheels done. I was in two minds about borrowing a set of wheels from them and getting them refurbished at the same time but decided to leave the next step until after the French trip.

I can’t believe how quickly they’ve got you in and done it. Outstanding.

If you get the chance take it on the same road and do the same again and see if things have improved.
