Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a mid-life crisis SLK200 R171 (250 at pinch). However I have been reading odd horror stories about expensive failures/repairs etc.
I'm working on the premise that I should be OK with a proper service history and and a reputable seller but, are there any obvious things to be wary of with this motor.?

Looks like I put this in the wrong place sorry :fail

What sort of age of car are you targeting? The 250 is only available as an R172...

The R171 - especially in facelift form - is pretty bomb-proof. Just make sure everything works (especially the roof mechanism) and if there's any sign of dampness or water in the boot, walk away.

Be aware that spec varies widely, and the small engine cars were often bought new with few options. Personally, I wouldn't buy one without Airscarf (if it has that it'll have heated seats too), but after that the choice of options is up to you.

+1 for airscarf.
It's a v useful option, means you can have the roof down more.
Also, it's a desirable option so will improve saleability in future.

Ours is now 11 years old. Apart from servicing and routine consumables its needed 1 lower ball joint on the front and a seal on the gearbox.
