slk 230
Hi Guys,

I have a 98 slk230, up until today I was able to lower and raise the vario roof no problem, then today I tried it and only the boot would open and fold back but the roof itself stayed where it was, upon inspection inside the working parts / cables etc, I found a metal cable with a loop on the end just sitting inside the hole, Would anyone be able to tell me where it came from and how to put it back, more importantly could this be the reason why the roof won't lower ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thankyou

Shane

Is this one of the cables that is recessed into the trim that is used to release part of the mechanism in the case of a roof failure?

These should be described in your manual in the section that describes how to raise the roof in the case of failure. My recollection is that if you follow the procedure described that there is a cable that you can access on each side which you pull to disengage the mechanisms to free up the roof so it can lifted. Carrying out the procedure causes some damage which requires a dealer or specialist to fix before the roof will operate again. So check your manual before doing anything with thse cables.

As regards your problem - try doing a search for details on the micro-switches that are used to detect the positioning of the roof and boot parts - given that the boot lid is operating then the chances are that it is one of these that is the problem.

There is a trouble shooting guide on this link:

Vario roof problem

Roof is now working fine, basically it had stuck, simples.
I gave the roof a few heavy handed knocks which was enough to unstick it. after which of course I WD'd and greased the appropiate parts.
Now I know what the cables are for :)
