Saw something in a magazine today (no I did not buy it, just flipped through it and put it back on the shelf...no , not top shelf, those I buy ) Don't quote me , but something like the 6 biggest (16 ?) container ships in the world pump out as much carp as 80 MILLION cars !!

And the 14mpg V8 Nissan (rental) pick up truck I handed back at Washington DC a few days ago didn't do much for the environment either and the USA is full of such V8 silliness . Why ? because the 560 miles I did in that V8 gas guzzler cost just £48 in fuel . The same in the UK would have cost £ 97.00. As long as this goes on we may as well all just drop diesel and craic on with big V8 engines...hold on, I have already done that

Will keep the wife's diesel estate until either a large bill/Mot fail ...I was thinking that we only use this thing to take the dog for walks in the Forest of Dean & New forest, that dog gets treated better than me!?

I have never liked diesels I had a ford Mondeo that had injector and fuel systems issues with i found out was common I replaced half the fuel system and in the end gave up and sold it.

Then i had the E Class with was a great car but diesel engines sound like crap so it never grew on me.

I hated rocking up in an immaculate Mercedes that sounded like a tractor.

I would imagine that Toyota cars are mainly petrol or hybrid anyway whereas Mercedes are generally larger cars and suit diesels in many instances. And many Mercedes customers favour diesels. I know there is an emissions issue but this can be improved on surely.

Exactly. Diesel if they could sort out the particulate issue makes more sense than petrol given its lower CO output.

Toyota have never really done diesel so it's not surprising.

Diesel is just a convenient scapegoat for the powers that be to shaft and then say "ooh look what we're doing for the environment, arent we great, please vote for us next time."

The only downside to modern diesel engines, is that they will not tolerate multiple short journeys, needless to say, nobody told you this before you bought it. As to the sound, on the road it's undetectable, but it's very much a personal thing. As for the Government hitting on them, I'm with Yugguy, they're a soft target, after the VWgate issue they're all lumped together.
