I just read on the BBC website that Bittern made a high speed run to commemorate Mallard's record setting 126mph run 75 years ago this coming Wednesday .

To commemorate this event , all six surviving A4 Pacific Class locomotives are going to be at the National Rail museum this Wednesday ( apparently the first time all six will have been seen together ) .

Two locomotives which were sent abroad after being retired : Dwight D Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada have been brought back from New York and Montreal respectively for this occasion . They will join Mallard , Union of South Africa , Sir Nigel Gresley and Bittern on display .

I would imagine that other famous locomotives such as Tornado and Flying Scotsman might well be on hand too ?

Certainly one not to be missed and I will need to see if I can get the day off to travel down .

I note that Bittern was kept out of the canopy at St Pancras. Can't have the shoppers keeling over in smoke...

Could well go myself to see that collection. Book online and you can get from Kings X to York and back for around £50.00 if you pick the right trains and avoid open ended return.

Shame it's only one day. When my hand is a teeny bit better it would be fun to take a day out on the train. Better than sitting around at home bored!

I too thought it was only the one day , going by the BBC newspage .

However , looking at the NRM website , 'The Great Gathering' is on three times :

3-17 July 2013

26 October - 8 November 2013 ( both daytime and nightime viewings )

15 -23 February 2014

The first two events at the NRM in York , and the last one at Shildon .

Mallard 75 - National Railway Museum

So we might all get a decent chance to go and see them . Entry is free to each event , so you just have to get there .

I have a number of shots of Bittern when she used to be based at The Watercress Line. This shot was when she was on a special passing Rowlands Castle.
