OK mini rant....
some little ********************* just smashed my driver side window and helped himself to my Garmin street pilot, I know it should not have been left in the car but I was on my way back from a journey and had just popped into the butchers.

point one, I REALLY want to go on a vigilanty killing spree:mad:
point two, (which is out side the relms of my evenings entertainment on the PS2) I need to get another sat nav unit on a budget (Have had the month from hell financially)
So sub £200 sat navs, any opinions or give me a REALLY good reason to spend more??

Cheers
Mark

I can't give you much of a reason to spend more. I'd almost suggest trying to get your hands on a second hand TomTom or other brand. People are discarding them for the newer models now, and there's nothing wrong with the old ones!

Sorry to hear about the theft. I've had my car broken into from just the mark left by the suction cap on the windscreen!

If I ever see someone stealing in that situation, I can promise you that I will make them pay for the your broken windows + mine! :-)

Cheers bud, thought about getting a used one but it would have to be from a trusted source as I think EBay is a nightmare for this kind of kit.

may be able to...not sure if I can do that with the 9-5 DIN layout

New Tomtom One £199 Dixons/Currys/PCworld.

Has the later sirf chip so its quick and works through windows etc.

Nice and small (and slim). Bluetooth for TMC-type traffic data.

TMC= traffic message channel, it's a live traffic update system for road conditions, weather etc - the idea is the unit decodes the info and steers you around any jams/accidents etc

HTH

cheers Andy, I can get a TomTom one, deliverd for £179 so do you think this is streets ahead for the money??

Mark,

You could do a lot worse than this

I paid twice as much for mine (although mines got Europe too), and I reckon £170 is a real bargain. It doesn't have all the fancy traffic updates, and you can't listen to text messages on it (why is everyone so obsessed with text messages?), or play music (another pointless extra, just like a phone in a camera), but as a Sat Nav that does Sat Navving, it's very good.

PJ

most of the in dash ones have TMC as well.

I don't like the pocket ones - mainly because of what's happened to you, it's all too easy to leave a tell tale sign that one may be in the car - one of our friends had the windows smashed and his car emptied even though the unit wasn't in the car - the Police reckoned it was because there was a distinctive sucker mark on the windscreen!!!

Now, hiding the unit, removing the holder and cleaning my windscreen every time I park the car has little or no appeal :) which is why i prefer the "in dash" units.

£179 sounds good though so if it fits the bill I'd go for it

The later built-in units get their TMC by having an extra radio tuner, fixed to Classic FM - the UK station that broadcasts TMC data.

The movable units generally pair with a bluetooth phone and log on to the vendor's site and copy the TMC data (and any databases you choose to subscribe to like weather, speed cameras etc) over the air. Data traffic is small but you DO need a data-enabled phone tariff. Dedicated TMC radios are coming in the next Tomtoms.

Hello mate Sorry to hear about you break in barstards, I have just got hold of a Garmin streetpilot 3, from a friend of mine that runs 2 A1 motor stores he got five in at £200 each a bargain they are older units but did cost the best part of a grand. They are brand new and I think he has 1 left if your interested??
Regards
Adrian

I was going to PM you but you have exeeded your limit...:)

Have you ever thought about tomtom mobile for your phone? It can be done very cheap,If you already have a compatable phone;)

Mark, I feel for you. Honestly  To those who dont know and think I am being sarcastic, well yes I am  No, I know Mark very well. Its sort of an in joke between us. I hope no one takes offence, but on a serious note. People who do this sort of thing i.e. stealing from cars, should be hung up by a very delicate part of the anatomy and beaten to death with something torn from their body.

If you need one in a hurry you can borrow mine. Sat nav I mean
