Was looking at my space saver spare earlier & couldn't help thinking how it could work properly in the event of a flat as i have staggered amg's with 255's on the front/285's on the back, surely the much slimmer/smaller spcace saver spare would unbalance the car if it needs to be used & would the airmatic suspension be affected in any way?

It is only ment to get you home, there is also has a speed limit when in use.

Hi,i'm aware of both points(have used a space saver spare in the past on a c180,unfortunately it was 160 miles from home & 11pm at night so driving at 50mph was boring, slow uncomfortable),perhaps i should have explained better, supposing i had a puncture on one of the rears that would mean driving home/to a garage on 2 front 255's,one rear 285 & the other the slim space saver-just seems so unbalanced:crazy:

More of the new mercedes now come with tyre weld insted of a spare, presumably for that reason.

I would replace the space saver with a standard sized wheel if i didn't have staggered one's!

No, it's because it's cheaper than providing a spare. But the reasons given are usually saving space in the boot and weight.

As mentioned, space savers are just meant to get you home. They are quite OK so long as you drive sensibly & within the limits given.

Not long after I bought my 211, I had a front wheel puncture (225 x 16 tyres). The space saver looked ridiculously narrow, so I sourced a matching alloy wheel on ebay and bought a new tyre as a spare. Fortunately, you can just get a full-size wheel in the boot recess of the E class. I may never get another puncture, but I'm far happier knowing that I have a 'proper' wheel swap to over rather than the space saver.

I have staggered 18" AMGs on the SL, the spare is an original 16" 8-hole alloy ... good enough for emergencies.

My son had a puncture on his cMax a couple of days ago, the tyre weld kit didn't work, so its wheel off and take it to get repaired. I think not having a spare wheel is economy gone mad, I wouldn't be best pleased at midnight in the middle of nowhere in the cold and rain with no effective means of continuing a journey.

Some versions of the 639 Vito only come with a tyre repair kit. We use ours for towing, so I made quite sure we were going to get a full-size spare (albeit 16" steel rather than 17" alloy).

Just wondering about the legal implications of fitting an odd size spare. Sounds odd, but the space saver (even odder size) has strict speed limits for it's use and is legal to use within these limits.

Different alloy sizes - If I have a spare front alloy wheel and the back one has a blowout, can you place it on the rear in the event of a puncture. Can this mess any of the mechanics up? Presumable the reverse is not true because the rear are bigger than the front? Tyre repair kits and space savers are useless, I would prefer a full sized steel wheel at least that way you can still drive as normal but i am unsure of the mathematics as to what size would match and not mess anything up? .C250 2010 - front 225-45-17-J7.5 rear 245-40-J8.5

Absolutely fine to get you home

being an rac patrol i go out to loads of cars that have space savers on them.they are fit for what they supposed to do,be a legal inflated tyre that can get you mobile to home or garage as soon as poss.they do look silly though and have had people say surely thats not safe.i doubt manufacturers would put a wheel in the boot of a car if it wasnt safe or legal lol:D
