Hi, newbie here. I have a CLK320 2003 which I have owned since new. All servicing has been done by local Merc dealer. I now want to do as much as possible myself. I have just had a "B" service and been quoted silly money to change the spark plugs, is this a job I can easily do myself. I am an mechanical engineer by profession and have a well equiped garage/workshop. I have allways done my own car maintenance mine/wife/sons, but since owning "new" mercs I have had my car serviced by the garage. I really dont want to continue to pay silly money to have what ammounts to little more than an oil change. Time and efort are not a problem, the only thing that can prevent me from the work is any "special tools required".

I think the trouble is access to the 12 spark plugs involved. One of our resident specialists Ian WALKER offers this service at a much reduced rate. He does employ some form of air-driven wrench to overcome the access problem. I sure if you PM him he will tell you of the pitfalls/whats involved. www.124works.com

Never yet done my plugs, but having gathered information from various forums, it's a simple matter of pulling off the ignition leads and undo the plugs (x12). The hardest part is access to the rear ones, Merc have a special tool for this but I was told you can get away with it by using an open ended spanner to lever the lead out, do not pull on the lead itself to try to free it. Other thing to remember is to note down which lead goes where as there will be 12 of them. Good luck

That is correct to get the leads off, just use an open ended spanner using the rocker cover as the fulcrum point

VERY IMPORTANT! Make sure the engine is warm/hot when you start to undo them otherwise you may come unstuck as they are often very tight and I have known the to snap (flippin' apprentice), and you dont want that (engine out!)

Get a good quality wobbly spark plug socket as this will aid you.

They are not difficult to do just a little fiddley.

And try not to pull on the leads too much as this can damage them.
