Can anyone give any pointers on spark plugs?

It appears I can put £1.70 Champions in or £9 iridium thingies. Presumably there is a reason for the difference.

Any thoughts - its for my 300CE24 - M104 engine.

You need to stick with the original plugs that Mercedes specifies.

The ECU takes into account the resistance etc of the plug. and the plug will be the correct heat range for the relevant engine.

Mercedes used to offer 3 plug choices for your age car but there seems to be a problems sourcing the correct Bosch ones (big discussion on this in USA forums) so you will likely be offered either Beru or champion.

Try German and Swedish - they usually stock a wide range of bosch plugs

The best thing is to stick with the original equipment Bosch, but failing that I have always found the correct heat grade conventional NGK's from Halfords to be a good substitute. Don't be tempted by the multi electrode types!

I've used www.sparkplugs.co.uk a few times and their service and prices are both superb.

I've just looked and I can't believe they don't list any sparkplugs for my ML270 CDi which I think is a poor show. Being a diesel it's a bit slow, and some iridium tipped plugs might pep things up a bit.

This is a special note to anybody that finds it. My ML is a diesel and therefore has no need for sparkplugs, and hence the reason they're not listed. I might be daft, but I'm not that daft. Let's sit back, relax, and see he takes the bait...

Good link , i'll try them next !!

Iridium's are probably a tad excessive for your car to be honest although they do produce a great spark with less voltage.

As for sticking with OEM thats completely your call your car will not care if you don't use OEM's, you wont damage anything by doing so nor will you hurt your fuel consumption and its a popular mod for people who drive these car's hard to go for a platinum plug.

Its also very popular with tuners who nearly always rip out the made to a budget stock plugs and replace with better quality units, i don't mean some guy with a wrench here I'm talking Brabus, Kleemann and Renntech so hardly lacking on the experience side.

All i would say is unless you really understand the heat ranges is not to change from the factory spec so use the same heat range plug.

Bobby Dazzler,
That's a very weird diesel you have there ;)

Thanks for the feedback, think I'll go (as ever) with the MB ones if they can be found - Croydon MB has so far come up with everything I've asked for (spare parts wise...)
