There was significant coverage in the news yesterday of a report that indicated a “worrying” (their words, not mine) trend of drivers increasingly treating speed limits as a target speed to travel at rather than a maximum.

With the policy of reducing speed limits all over the place to artificially low levels, what baffles me is that anyone is surprised that this is the response.

Bloody ICE drivers! Nothing wrong with cruising on the motorway in your Tesla doing 60....... :D

Interestingly enough (to me), now I'm darn sarf I now see Teslas in the fast lane whereas oop north they were always in the slow lane. Logic: down here people on the motorway are usually commuting to and from the London office so are not worried about range, hence they tend to be more Audiish in their driving behaviour, ie 75 mph in the icey conditions whereas I'm plodding along at 60 to be safe.

This news is nothing new and I witness idiots in cars almost daily.

In the snow, where the side road speed limits are 30/20mph etc, idiots will cruise down towards a junction like they do in the dry and wet - and as you are driving along the
main road, you stomach sinks for a second thinking the idiot is just going to shoot into you etc.

This also applies to heavy rain, ice, black ice, fog, built-up areas, and schools at start/finish times.

Driving lessons/tests can only do so much, the rest is left to common sense and awareness which is sadly lacking in many drivers as well
as cyclists, moped riders and pedestrians walking their dog and using their mobile phone who just step out in front of your car or are pulled into the road by their dog as the owner is too busy chatting bs on their mobile.

NB: Good driver would never fling their car door open without looking and ensuring they are no going to cause an accident with another vhecle or pedestrain.

This is a motoring forum, not Facebook. There are only fast lanes and overtaking lanes on motorways, no slow lanes.

I’m more worried by the attitude of many drivers that the speed limits don’t apply to them because they’re good drivers in modern cars.

My wife treats the speed limit as a target. 😬😬
I don’t think my wife has any idea that speed limits exist 😱. She just drives at whatever speed she deems fit, with any relationship to speed limits being purely coincidental.

Someone who I knew ago felt he was a racing driver just because she had a slk. I told him once that he'd not only get banned but possibly kill someone
and end up in jail when he told me about speeding down the Embankment along the river Thames.
When he eventually got a ban of only 3 months as magistrates took pitty I guess, ie he needed car for her work
as he had a certain target to complete ie assessments which were often miles apart, did she cry like....
He went of sick with depression they say and when he returned after three months - he was cocky as ever but everyone noted
he drove a lot slower - lesson learned I guess

When I completed my motorcycle IAM - after the run the “examiner” explained that NSL meant No Speed Limit and asked me to demonstrate 😉. The IAM bunch are not as stiff as some think (in my experience ROSPA more so).

I sometimes experience “bumper riders”- whilst driving, as diligently stick to speed limits irrespective if 20/30/40/50/etc. points do not make prizes! Have room to improve my motorway and dual carriageway speeds obedience.

Would love to know what is a motorway fast lane. Under the impression that lanes 2/3/4/x are overtaking or passing lanes.

When I took the advanced test, I understood that I was required to drive "at" the speed limit "wherever possible" - otherwise there was a risk of failing for failing to make progress. Obviously road conditions, traffic etc impacted on the "wherever possible".

This meant that - on a clear, straight road with no hazards I drove at the speed limit, while slowing for bends, obstructions, hazards etc and accelerating again once past.

I think the real danger is those drivers who view the "arrival at destination" time on their sat-nav as a challenge to beat...

Told you I wasn’t lying… you must have spotted me. 😂
