Spidering under alloy wheel lacquer of diamond cut surface

all 4 of my SL’s alloys have the above .. just happened in the last few months

car and wheels just under 3 years old

going in for service in a fortnight

any thoughts on how likely MB will provide new wheels or pay for refurbishment?

The place near me that refurbishes diamond cut alloys will not guarantee them for more than 6 months, powder coated are guaranteed for 2 years. What does that tell you?

Are they kerbed?

If not MB will replace them under warranty.

Had all four replaced on my W204 for the same reason however they will reject your claim if they have been scuffed.

If one kerbed and three not surely you should have a claim for three and fork out for the other one! It must be worth a punt!

I had one wheel refurbished through the dealer I bought the car from. None OEM diamond cut lasts no where near as long. After 8 - 9 months one tiny chip meant that a whole spoke has got worming. OEM can be chipped and not get anywhere near as much corrosion.

Just get them powder coated for around £250 and leave it at that.

When I had mine replaced they ended up the same way eventually anyway.

If you are keeping the car you might be better off just getting them coated, problem solved.

I had all four replaced on my 0ld w204 when it was just over a year old, no quibble, my w205 does not have diamond cut alloys I think Mercedes have learnt a lesson. Just go and ask politely, stating that a quality car should not have this problem as cheaper brands like Renault etc do not suffer with diamond cut problems even at 5 years old, you might be lucky, if they offer to do the 3 non kerbed ones, ask them for a part payment towards the 4th as a goodwill gesture.

You can only ask. If they can see it’s not damaged then you may be given the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately they could say small stone chips have caused it. But as said, if you don’t ask

To be honest diamond cut wheels are bloody rubbish. They look good for five minutes then suffer with this issue and need a refurb.

I had a set of wheels refurbished years back and had a polished lip on them. The firm actually said that they’d recommend leaving it bare metal and just give it a quick polish now and then. Explained that lacquer doesn’t bond to bare metal so it’ll flake off or tarnish.

Why manufacturers thought it’d be good for their cars I’ve no idea.

That's what i did on my old CL55 which had AMG 1V 2pc. It worked really well, lots of Gtechniq C5.

Other than the kerbed one, I'd be astonished if MB quibble over replacing them under warranty. They replaced both rears that had clouding of the lacquer on my pre-facelift W212 E63 when the car was just under 3 years old without question, and the forged 19" AMG's concerned retailed at just over £2k a pop at the time.

nice one, father in laws 5 year old kia had the same on the diamond cut wheels, dealer got 4 new wheels ordered for him to under warranty!

Like for like, no choice of replacement wheels.

I am OK with that as I like the current wheels anyway
