Spotted: Mercedes e36 amg cabriolet

Ask them if the head gasket or wiring loom's been done..........

even a crap colour looks good on that car

that for me is the ultimate mercedes (but would need to be blue/black or azurite blue)

there are 3-4 near mint w124's around atm but all £20,000+ as i know the E36 Coupe from the mercedes museum is for sale and i think a few other private collection ones

It's nice and certainly rare but is it really worth £21k? It's surely not worlds apart from a 320 Sportline in terms of performance and handling.

From a collector's perspective, I think for anyone who owns a 124 cab, the E36 is the Holy Grail, along with a hardtop! Since buying my E320cab a few years back, I've had a bit of a rethink. For the roof, you have to modify your own vehicle to accommodate one, then you have the hassle of storage and removal, with new holes in your hood cover to look at, and frankly, the soft tops are so well insulated that if you are using the car in bad weather (I try not to), there seems little need for one. It is, though, probably the ultimate accessory, bound to provoke jealousy in others!

Having spent a long time looking at and travelling to some not quite right examples of cabriolets, I went to look at a bona fide E36 coupé out of frustration (beware of the conversions). A quick call to my main dealer confirmed it was the real deal, being sold by the first owner, in azurite blue with blue hood and upholstery. Having driven to this guy's lovely farm estate in my SL500, I was quite underwhelmed with the test drive. It was on about 77k miles, due a very costly service, and as much as I liked it, it just didn't deliver what I had hoped for. I wasn't sure if this was how they drove, or if it would improve significantly after its service, so I decided to be patient. He had a drive of my SL before I went, and someone was coming to view the car the following day. I sometimes regret not buying it, but I didn't want to part with my 300CE, the first MB I bought, and the plan was to sell the SL once I had another convertible.

Looking at the performance figures in the PH thread above, the AMGs aren't particularly impressive, and I'm not keen on spoiler kits on older cars if I'm honest, although the one above doesn't have one. My SL had become a bit of a workhorse over the years (in Ollie's workshop as I type!), so I decided to keep it, rather than sell it for silly high mileage money, and it drives so much better than the AMG, which itself didn't have the same difference over the E320. As much as I would love an E36 cab, I'd rather keep the two that I have for about the same sort of money! Just my thoughts (which are extended to my SL's gearbox at the moment!!).

No, my feeling is this one isn't. I enquired several months back if anything apart from routine servicing had been done and got no sensible reply at all. If nothing has been done at that mileage it is clear it will need a wiring loom, head gasket and a steering/suspension refit. Just a word of caution to anyone thinking of proceeding...........:thumb:
