Sprinter Automatic Gearbox help please

Hi everyone hope you are all well i need help what to do with my sprinter. Yesterday I drove the van and in traffic I put the automatic gearbox in neutral and when traffic moved I put it back to gear and did not move then I put it back again to driver it worked but only stuck in second gear and the van was reving. Then I pulled over turn off the van take the switch out then started driving again on driver D then the van for fine . What could be wrong with the gearbox or what happened to the van why did it do that please give me some advice what to do? Any help would be appreciated.
