Hi guys,

Anyone had this before ?

I am getting a squeking (type of noise) from the air vents in my centre console. When I turn the heater off completely the noise stops. If I just turn off the aircon (put it into economy mode) the noise remains.

My wife's aircon has just given up on her coupe, and she tells me just before it did she was hearing a similar noise. The guy that regassed it for her (and now it is working fine) said the noise can someitmes be an indication that there isn't enough gas in the aircon unit ?

Anyone elase had this experience ? I don't want to have to have it regassed if the problem persists afterwards as the aircon is working fine at the momement.

Cheers,
VM

May be completely irellevant, but my aircon was 'squeaking' last night....only picked car up on Sat (old 98 202 model).

Turned out it is the aircon vent on the passengers side, that when closed, lets a small amount of air through and causes a squeaking noise.

Does it still squeak when all the vents are wide open?

May be useless info, but it was the case in my situation!!

I had an intermittantly squeaky blower fan on my W124 aircon, at about 4 years old, and it needed a new electric motor which was done under extended warranty.
It only gets worse!

update .... the vents make no difference open or not. What does make a difference is the speed of the fan ... if I turn AUTO off and set the spped to 1 there's no noise ... anything above 1 and the squeak is there. It also makes no difference whether to aircon is on or off. I am testing the noise whilst moving and standing still as I THINK it only happens when moving along.... that all said ... it DOES suggest to be the motor of maybe the fan blade .... bugger ! I did read on here somewhere that it's quite easy to get the motor out .. anyone done that ?

Thanks guys .. I don't tend to drive with the radio on much and it is driving me up the wall !!!

You've described the exact fault I experienced.
Because the squeak began intermittently and then only when on position 2 (not 1 or 3) I deliberately left it on 2 hoping it would get worse and become a warranty claim. It took only about a fortnight to become a persistent nuisance, although the fault didn't spread to the other speed settings before I had the blower replaced.

How about taking out the blower motor and identifying the source of the squeak? It may be repairable and if not, think of the health benefits of driving with the windows open...:)

If you've got a W210 then getting the fan/motor assembly out is easy.
You get access to it from under the passenger side dashboard, so does require a bit of grovelling in the passenger footwell. Its near the pollen filter, which you can pull out and inspect/change at the same time if you have the inclination. It should be reasonably obvious how to get it out, I think there are 3 Torx screws holding it in Undo these then it basically falls out. Easiest with an electric screwdriver. I can't remember if there is a cover to get off first, but if there is then it comes off easy as it doesn't stick in my mind as being difficult! Have a shufty with a torch under the dashboard.

Sorry .. forgot to mention ... I have an 03 E270 CDi .... but I'm guessing the heater components are going to be placed pretty similarly .. there are only so many places they can put them :) I'll try and get a look the weekend when I'm back home during daylight hours :( thanks guys
