A friend of mine asked if any of you guys have got any ideas what the problem may be.

Stalling 230CE

I have just acquired a 230CE and it drives and handles like a dream, though I seem to have an unusual problem whilst driving. Sometimes when I'm driving I seem to lose drive, I'll put my foot flat on the accelerator and there's no response from the engine in terms of revs. All the dashboard electrics come on and the car rolls to a halt. If I give the car a 5 minute rest it starts and works normally again. With this problem I dare not take the car on the motorway or dual carriage way as a stall there would be very dangerous.

I'm guessing that it's an engine management problem or there is a loose wire somewhere causing me to lose drive or even a fuel pump problem. Can anyone shed some light on this problem?

Normally I would say fuel pump or overvoltage relay. Quite a common fault. But all the dashboard warning lights coming on ??? Best guess would be some sort of wiring shortto earth or short circuit causing voltage to drop to the fuel pump supply/ignition hence no engine but 12volts to warning lights. Other possibility is water getting to the electrics somewhere. does it happen in wet conditions?? your friend will have to examine all the wiring closely to track down the fault. obvious places would be the dashboard and floor under the carpets. there was another post on here recently about an SLK where water had got into the fuse box to give lots of weird problems.

Almost certainly the OVP relay, tall silver relay in the ecu compartment at nearside rear of engine bay, this is a known fault on these cars but does not show up on a diagnostic test. Check the fuse/fuses on top first as they can blow and give the same symptoms. 5 minute job to replace and costs about £40+ from Eurocarparts.
Let us know how you get on.
Geo.

Cheers for the prompt replies. I will be passing on the info.

I'll post any findings.
