Start Stop Battery Question

So I have noticed the Eco light in my newly acquired 2013 E250 CDI Amg Sport Coupe is orange. And stop start doesn't seem to work.

So going to rule out the easiest thing first, the aux battery. A couple of questions.

What aux battery do I need? I can't get to the car right now but would like to order tonight if possible

And does it need to be programmed or is it just a case of taking the old one out and the new one in?

Thanks for any help

It’s that time of year that batteries get a hammering, because most of us take more out of the battery than we put in, due to short journeys, in the dark with the heater, air conditioning and radio on. It likely just needs recharging using a CTEK MXS 5.0 or similar - try charging before replacing 👍🏻

Ok thanks, will give that a try, I have a Halfords Advanced battery charger. Supposed to do AGM, stop/start and all that. Will that be suitable?

However, in case that fails, eurocarparts said this battery - Exide EK131 AGM Stop/Start 13AH 200CCA Auxiliary Battery - Does that look about right?

As long as your charger is compatible with AGM batteries then it should be fine. Check whether it can be used whilst the battery is on the car, or whether it has to be removed first, and charged away from the car.

The battery you mentioned sounds like it’s ball park right. If the battery doesn’t charge, and the replacement turns out not to be the right one, then Euro Car Parts are usually pretty good with returns but check with them before ordering.

I think the logbook says body type 207 or something but I don't know much about Mercedes or what that relates to. I think you might be right at the battery location though

I want everything to work, whether I use it or not is a different matter and the aux battery does more than just stop start so would like to make sure its in good working order. I don't actually like stop start. Had it on my BMW however like I said I do want things to work when they are supposed to be 😂

Brake hold as well I believe and something about putting the car in park if the main battery fails.

Not on my C Class it doesn't , I completely removed the auxiliary battery around 4 years ago to permanently disable the wrecking ball of Stop Strain whilst brake HOLD remained to function .

I haven't had brake HOLD working much lately this winter unless taken for a longer drive due to my twilight 13 year old main battery.

Your model is classed as a c207 when shopping for parts , your small battery should be in the boot on the right side . Stop start depends alot on the main battery being fully charged also , so charge that first before splashing any cash . The aux battery typically powers things like ,fans , comand, wipers ,lights etc when stop start activates and your waiting. Chances are your little light will turn green after hooking up your charger to the jump start pegs for 24 hours , don't go directly to the battery terminals.

Do you mean to say that the HOLD function stops working because the battery voltage is too low?

The battery voltage shouldn't make a difference whole the engine is running and the alternator produces the electricity.

Unless MB deliberately programmed it in this way?

It's true that the C207 E-Class coupe is based on the W204 C-Class Saloon, and my W204 C180 indeed had the auxiliary battery in the boot as you described it, however my recollection regarding the W204 is that with some engine types it's the other way around, i.e. the smaller auxiliary battery is located in the engine bay while the bigger starter battery is in the boot - something about not having sufficient space in the engine bay with the larger engine types - someone correct me if I am wrong?

My e350 c207 had a rather large v6 lump for an engine and the battery was under the bonnet . Aux was in the boot , so not sure as to how big the engine had to be before the swap , V8 ,V12 ?

Any e500 owners on here ??

Yes Mark that's how it's behaving , when I put it on charge the Smart chargers display shows it only charging up to 11.8 - 12V, but starting hasn't failed .

It started last winter , but a quick run to the shops and after the restart I'd have HOLD back.

Now it has to be a 20 mile run .

When my car was just under 3 years the aux battery failed. Hold facility, main beam assist, stop start and I think some other things stopped working.
On both our cars we turn stop start off as soon as we start the engine and I agree it seems to be a bad thing to use it but I do like everything on my car to be working as the manufacturer intended.
Last spring when the car was 8 years old it seemed to be getting tired so I replaced it with one from Tayna for £51.
For such a small amount its not worth worrying about IMO

My stop start almost stopped working at about 18 months and I was grateful - then only longer trips and following that it worked for a couple of days. FYI, I bought the car brand new - then about 18 months ago I decided to change my main battery as MB wanted to change it 2 years before that - the main battery still worked but I noted the strain in the cold - changed the main battery and stop/start started working again
BTW - car was fir reg in 2016 and had FSHMB now 24k miles

So if you main battery is old - consider that or recharge
