CLK 240 Convertible
Hi Folks - new on here
I have a 2004 CLK 240 petrol V6 convertible with 62k miles in overall excellent condtion - just had a B service with no faults diagnosed. However a couple of times I've started the car recently - reversed out of the garage - let the car idle for a while then switched off. Then when I try to restart the car to drive off or put it back in the garage - it turns over but doesn't fire up - not a glimmer. The only way I've found of getting it to restart is to let it go totally cold or disconnect the battery for 10mns then reconnect and off it goes. Normal driving on star stop start journeys it behaves itself - just that short time from cold. I've tried letting it idle to full temp but it still misbehaves.

Any ideas ?

Could possibly be a faulty crankshaft position sensor.

When they go faulty they stop the engine from starting or cut the engine out when hot and it is a common fault. When you leave it to cool down the car starts again.

+1 as above. I had mine changed a while back just in case it failed as it was then around 110k. Took Terry @ wayne gates at least 5 mins

Thanks Guys - sensor ordered for DIY fitting - I'll let you know how it works out !

a techie said to me once it was a case of when it happens not if!:D

There is an old hat problem called Lawnmower Syndrome where the owner gets the car out the garage moves out the lawnmower then when trying to start it won`t because the temp. sensor says it it still cold but really it doesn`t need cold start and so it floods!!....which is probably why it starts when left to get cold or when disconnecting the battery all is reset regardless.

The motor should always be warm or hot before turning off and it will not happen.
