Strange filter Please enlighten me

Hope someone can enlighten me but I noticed that when looking at the engine of my e220 w210 model on the left hand side there is a black plastic box with some tubes coming out of it one of which seems to have a small filter on it. I'm just curious as to what this is part of and is the filter a service item .

Sounds like a vacuum control box, or similar?........the filter will be to stop debris from entering the system and will be a servicable item.

That is the EGR valve transducer and the filter is just to stop "things" entering the vacuum system, and doesn't need changing.
