When i rev my car, There is a strange kind of rattle/grrr kind of noise from the front of the engine(i think ) It hapens around 1000 rpm then disapears!!!

Its worse when the engine is cold.

Could this be the timing chain? The car has just turned 122.000 with full history but it did tow a cravan for a number of years(before i got the car). Could this have put extra strain on the timing chain? It is only a 2.0L with 126bhp after all, not the best towing car, imho.

Does anyone have the same with their car?

Any info would be great

Stu.

Could be the alternater/ pump belt try pouring water water on them when it makes this noise watch out for splashes if it goes away the change the belt/s

Could be something exhausty too - I find strange rattly noises can often be attributed to exhausts.

If its a timing chain problem I would expect it be noisiest at tickover, and a rattling sound - a bit like a timing chain slapping around on things.

Wouldn't expect towing to put any more strain on the timing chain - I doubt it makes it rev much higher, and the only strain on that chain is to spin the camshaft.

Maybe pop the rocker cover off and check the chain etc? Only takes about 10 minutes and could be a wise move! ;)

If it needs replacing, it can be done in-situ. Shouldn't cost a fortune, and may save you £££s down the line (if it breaks!).

Obviously worth checking anything else first, but you could well be correct with your suspicions!

Replace the gasket if necessary - should only cost a few quid!

Good Luck,

Cheers,

Will

Thanks for the replies :)

I checked the chain today and thats all fine and dandy. Also had a stainless back box fitted today and got them to check for anythig loose on the system but all was fine. Water pump fine, alternator and bracket fine.

Spose il have to wait for somthing to break till i find out what it is :D
