Strange Noise

for a while now my engine / car has been making a stange noise under acceleration, hard to describe but its like a Whooosing noise and not the usual mechanical sound... there dosent seem to be any power lose.. its just very stange and ideas what could be causing this... some days its not there but it is getting more common..

call me an idiot..is that the one the fan belt goes round.. cause the only other fan i have is the air con one and that cant come on without air con working..can it.

Is it a normally aspirated petrol? If so, I'd say like Dieselman that the fan is coming on...

does that noise comes up with rpm change ?
could be the ball bearing of some generator water pump, etc
