Hi all, i have a big problem, whenever i drive my car, it will not move out of 2nd gear, and it will top at about 35mph.

Anyone know what the problem could be...?

Thanks!

It could be your speed sensor my cl500 got stuck in 2nd also i took it to some one it cost about €600 to fix mine he has not fixed it yet as when he put it on star he reset it and it works fine but will go again

Limp home mode (gearbox) is normally 3rd gear.

Did you notice anything odd on the gearbox before this happened ?...Hard gearchange etc ? Get the codes read.

I rekon speed sensor - it cost me £600 at mercs but you can get it done much cheaper at a mercedes gearbox specialist.

Ive see brand new speed senso plates for the 722.6 going for about £30 !!!

My 2002 SLK320 did that once. I drove it 2 miles and stopped for fuel, then when I set off again it refused to change out of 2nd gear. I limped home and used another car instead.
Later that day I tried it again and it was back to normal. I phoned Mercedes who said that it had probably put itself into "emergency mode" and that whatever caused it may already have rectified itself.
I took the car in to be checked and the only fault code it had stored was a faulty brake light switch, but I never found out whether that was related to the problem which triggered the auto gearbox emergency mode.

It has been known for the Brake light switch to do this as it can kill the speed signal and the car box does not know what to do and settles in the limp home mode
