I have a 1988 Mercedes w124 300D,the only thing it dosn't have, that I would quite like is a sunroof. Does anyone know if it would be possible and viable and not too expensive to buy an entire roof panel from a breakers that already has a sunroof fitted and have it fitted to my car.Iam not bothered about having to get it pained as my roof is needing paintwork anyway. or am I better off going the aftermarket route.

Wow!! sounds like one hell of a project.I dont think it could be possible for that type of roof chop.I think the roof is an integral part of the body shell and aids rigidity and any chopping and welding will affect the structual strength, a big no no.I would think aftermarket fitment would be better unless someone else knows different.

I agree with Pluggers on this too. The roof lining as an example has to come out and oh what joys they are to re fit, not! Plus there is all the electrics and setting the tilr / slide up properly.

You could get a new roof skin as mentioned but I would aggree with the others that unless done correctly could weaken the structure of the car. Plus I would dread to think how much they would charge you  .
IMO you are better off going for a aftermarket type. There are some really nice aftermarket sunroofs out there now  .
I fitted one to a car a few years ago that had tilt/slide and was electric.
Cost a few £££'s then but worth it no leaks while I had the car (another 2-3 yrs) & was still going strong when I sold the car.

Yes I thought this would be the easiest and most cost effective answer. thanks guys for your advice much appreciated. :D

My 2p.

Don't fit an aftermarket sunroof. They are never that good or look like an integral part of the car.

If you really need a sunroof change the car, if it's too hot fit aircon.

Well the saga contues, Got a brand new sunroof off Ebay for a song and had it professionally fitted by my local sunroof installer today, and they made an excellent job of triming the headlining and they managed to cover the imperfection on the paint on the roof so I don't need to get it painted now .SORTED. :bannana:
