My Dad currently ownes a 2003 E320Cdi Advanguade Estate, bought from new and collected from factory.

Its Silver, Grey leather, Phone, Sunroof (no command) its on just over 100K full mercedes Service history. Parking sensors front and rear.

My ML is a 2003 350 Inspiration, 48K Miles I've owned 2 years bought on 36K,

Dads currently looking at other cars.... The E class estate is the longest car he has kept however he asked me would I want it if he sells it.

Now, It does more MPG (but not a great issue to my Millage), it has a Sunroof (I would like in mine) but apart from that its pretty much the same bit longer in the boot but not as high (for our pram etc).

Would the sensible thing be to swap for it? I was thinking I would have to sell mine and add a couple of grand? if thats the case LPG in mine and I'm getting 40mpg anyway... athough cheaper tax in the E class?

I'm not sure, I know its a good car, and owned from new but twice the millage also...

What do people think? This is the only picture I have but you all know what they look like.

I think you know what I'm going to say :D

I'm swaying to keep mine to be honest but sensible probably to swap it?

It does feel small after driving mine...odd as its bigger?

I heard a diesel E go past my house this morning - not something I'd enjoy hearing. That V6 sound is worth the silly fuel consumption...your mileage going up?

Nope, No reason to change only I was asked and got me thinking...

Too be fair it does go well but your right it still a tractor starting up or in town... :)

Well you know your car, you can presumably have an extended test drive in your dad's car.

Which do you prefer?

As above - why not swap for a week?

Regardless of all the numbers, what do you prefer to own/drive - the ML or E-estate?

Will

Hi

SWAP IT

Before he changes his mind.

I am biased though:D

i would keep the ML definitely...................oh and then introduce me to your dad so i can buy it! :D

I have an E estate and love them. Also owned an ML270cdi and liked that very much too. Both are good cars. You will miss the height in the ML IMO. Forget petrol fans talking about the sound of diesel; a) it is a lovely sound and b) you can hardly hear it inside the car where you are and at cruising speed it is no noisier than petrol -see the road tests.

You will like the mpg but you do few miles.

Why change to a car with twice your mileage? Makes no sense to me unless you really want the E estate in which case I would buy a post facelift one , if you can.

It is longer -not bigger. The height of the ML gives a wonderful feeling of space. And the screen is less raked so more room in front of the driver.

Sunroofs are useless BTW. Noisy. Had lots of them and only use for the first week.

I use my sunroof a lot in warmer weather when bimbling around town/country lanes, its nice to see the sky sometimes, and it cools the car down quickly if its been parked in the sun. I agree, no use at higher speed though.

211 every time. Newer design, safer, more comfortable, faster (by miles) and more economical

Re safety, I understand that NCAP ratings are obviously useful and no one would buy an unsafe car but is this a major purchasing criteria for most car owners?

Methinks that A210AMG just fancies a change :D

I've only ever driven a diesel ML and even compared to my ancient CE it was somewhere between a luxurious transit and a canal barge - the 211 must surely give the better driving experience.

Some good thoughts...

I'm supprised I don't find the drive of the E class remarkably better than my ML? I know my shape ML gets bad reports but the 350 engine in it makes for a real crusing machine. His doesn't feel that much quicker up to normal motorway speeds although granted on paper it probably is.

Like others have said It just planted a seed, should I change. too be hinest the millage I do maybe a E500 estate would be a better bet :) its only as I know this car and its history.

Sunroof I would love as coming from a series of convertible cars I really miss that.

I would miss the height of the ML for sure thats really nice, the space is also more usable in a way and getting the little one into the car seat is easier and more room...

Guess I will stick wth the barge, I happen to like it even the bad press. Its been good for us so far, just over 2 years of ownership.

Will have a think. Thanks

I have sold my ML270CDI the other week, I sort of regret selling it now as I was realy attached to it.

I enjoyed driving the ML. I may look into buying another one now.

Thanks for your cautionary tale - I shall hold on to mine then :) - see A210AMG...see what happens? REGRET! :)

Probably right :)

I took long enough finding this one. Thing is either I'm missing something or the E class doesn't seem 'that' much more comfortable etc than what I have? I drove 850 miles one day from Annecy to Chester and it did it with no problems and in torential rain storm near reams the ML felt very safe. Its just as I have the option and got me thinking.

Some larger wheels are STILL required on mine and maybe treat it to some other bits and bobs :)

I believe one gets attached to the vehicle and plus like you said it took you ages to find the one you wanted and that is also another factor.

I drove a few other MERCS today but I just can't get over how good the ride was in my ML was (very comfortable).

I remember once I took my dad to Birmingham in the ML and his words were "I don't feel as though I've travelled to Birmingham.

All my family and friends are upset with me because I sold the ML.

Anyway I looking for another one now. Hopefully newer.

So I would say keep the ML:)

Cheers,

Funny enough I gave my dad a lift from llangollen to Knutsford and he commented on how well my car rode. It is very smooth and quite at cruising speeds.

Thats it then I'm keeping the bus :)

PS did you sell your alloys with the car?
