Thinking about selling Merc for a vw Touareg altitude 08 plate, anyone had one? Wanting a nice 4x4 with a bit of power

I have lots of friends that have had them in all variants and q7's (literally the same car), and unless your buying new or with 10k on the clock I would highly suggest looking at x5's or ml's, they are horrendous! I could list the problems but would take up pages, I know all cars have problems but they are ridiculous, the last one was last week in my pals q7, at 70k with full Audi history, the high pressure fuel pump has failed and has been quoted 12 for a whole complete fuelling system due to damage, a very common problem apparently, and that's before the gearbox explodes and costs £6k at 80k

I would have thought that the ml would cost more to repair than a vw Touareg ?

The worst problem that I have come across with the whole car is the speed sensor in the 7 g-tronic which was fairly inexpensive. I can't seem to find a trait of problems with the ml's, that's why I've had 2. My dad had one from new to 140k with nothing but servicing, I've never heard of that with the Touareg.

The Touaregs and q7's are great to drive but there are lists and lists of massive failures on a large amount, it's just put me off ever owning one, an owner might pipe up in a minute with some better knowledge.

I drive a q7 abt they can be a complete pain the heater motors blow on them cost 350 to replace then a week later my suspension messed up cost me 2 grand to repair wish I'd kept my discovery 4 tbh

Get an ML320 CDI, great cars and IME very reliable. Like any large premium 4x4 an ML costs a lot when things go wrong but luckily they don't go wrong very often.

Hi jacking here but what was the disco like? My wife fancies one as I'm after something a bit more "nuts" and petrol at the mo.

I've owned the following, so ask away about any and I'll tell you my general experiences:

LR Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE
LR RR Sport TDV6 HSE
LR RR Sport TDV8 HST
Audi Q7 4.2 TDi S-Line
Mercedes ML 420 CDi Sport

2.7 is sluggish as hell, but a very good drive, chuckable into corners and very comfy too. I had a facelift FFRR and drove my pals disco3 for 2 days, hated the engine and couldn't put up with it but preferred the drive of one. He had his from 2004 54 new till last year and said he couldn't fault it, only ever had usual wear and tear and he's a builder who often towed coming up to 5 tonne.

Yea the 2.7 is just about "moderate" when in the jag xf, I test drove a Range Rover "sport" with it in, oh my.
The 3.0 sounds good though, I was just terrified it would feel like a boat in the bends.

I've driven a few Discos over the years. The 3.0 diesel is fine for performance - feels quite sprightly; they are comfy, and IME handle remarkably well - not particularly wallowy and quite chuckable if you are in the mood. Auto gearbox is fine. I didn't do a lot of off-roading, but then no one does, and the odd mild bit of off Tarmac was predictably no problem at all. From Disco 4 onwards the interior is considerably improved and the quality feel is a big step up from the 3. Mechanically not a lot in it though, so it's really all about the interior. They are huge inside and can take massive amounts of luggage, or seven adults in decent comfort. I spent an entertaining few miles in rural France in one, 7-up with big blokes, me behind the wheel testing out the yaw and pitch in a (failed!) effort to make the boys in the back throw up!

As others have said though I would keep well clear of any 2.7s. But I'd be quite tempted by a 3.0 Disco 4 if the opportunity knocked.

Handles well in the bends as it's basically a RR sport, I was happy to chuck it in at speeds you'd roll an old td5 disco 2

They do share a lot of parts but trust me, although they are deceivingly agile, a D3 handles nothing like a RR Sport, they drive completely different.

I had a similar mindset before I sold my D3 for my Sport; "what's the point, I'm actually losing the 7 seat capabilities too!" but they do drive like chalk and cheese; the Discovery 3/4 is a fantastic all rounder but the RR Sport is a lot more road focused i.e. tighter round bends, quieter cab etc etc.

Oh right, that's interesting as a RR sport is one I haven't driven. To be fair I'm unlikely to get one as I would never buy one over a FFRR, just don't like them compared to the space and mainly the tailgate ha!

Besides the tailgate, the RRS is my favourite vehicle.

I've toyed with a FFRR but I'm still in my early thirties so I don't want one until I'm nearing at least 40!

The disco 4 was a awesome car had the comfort plus performance as previously said can fit a 7 a side football team in there and still have comfort
