Tailgate struts auto opening

Hi guys , I'm after some info on my auto opening tailgate struts.
I have ordered 2 new struts and I have gone to fit them but I have found I have 4 on the rear not 2, I can only assume 1 pair for opening action and one pair for closing dampening.which set does what I don't know.
The pair I have are quite fat bodied compared to the other pair which are of slimmer body.Which ones are for the closing motion and how can I get the correct part number for them.

I'm not familiar with the auto opening so may be off here.
On my 09 211 there is one strut to each side of the tailgate. They are to the extreme of each side.
Mine are likely in need of replacement otherwise when I open the tailgate I would expect them to raise it on those, just by the compressed springs and damper pressure.

I see balls for additional struts to the inside of each strut. I guess they would be for the closing.

Where can i buy Drive Spindle (A166 890 00 00) for ML250 2014. Please help. Tailgagate not opening and closing at the press of any of the buttons, either on the fob key, from inside the car or on the bootlid. Thanks
