I received a letter from the Motor Insurance Bureau yesterday, saying my 3 wheeler wasn’t legal, as it wasn’t insured. As I was medically unable to drive at insurance renewal time in January, I didn’t renew, as it wasn’t going to be used for a while. I didn’t SORN it, as I hoped I’d be driving again before long.

What I didn’t realise was that I should have SORNed it: a taxed vehicle, used or not, has to be insured

The Continuous Insurance requirement is a real PITA and, as with most bureaucratic "solutions" penalises only those who try to do the right thing.

Those who don't bother with VED or Insurance are totally unaffected by it, in the same way that reducing speed limits has no effect upon those who choose to ignore the prior, higher, limit.

Sorry to hear this. So what's the next step - just get it SORNed and all is well again? Or are MIB requesting something else?

MIB said I had 28 days to sort it, either SORN or insure it. I did the latter, with an MOT test booked for next week, just in time for better weather 🤞🤞

Tell them you’re Del-Boy,
you’ve put a Guinness label on the windscreen, that’ll sort it, 👍

You were lucky, a friend of mine got a £100 fine for having a motorbike taxed but not insured. The motorbike in question was in pieces in a garage being repaired (so definitely off the road). The annual tax was only £25 so there seemed little point in cancelling the few months left on the vehicle whilst it was off the road. However, apparently the rules are now that if it's taxed it has to be insured. Another beautifully thought out government rule....

Should not be a surprise to anyone.....its been like that for years.....started February 4, 2011 if Google is too be believed.
