Given my obsession with stupidly large cars, I did not really think about an E55 but it seems to tick all the boxes

4 doors
Can use a babyseat easily (the new arrival, in about 14 days, will be entering the CL 'Dukes of Hazzard' style)
Quick
It's a Merc
They have sunroofs

However, I hear tales of woe with the rust and electrical gremlines on the E-Class

Are they junk, from the darkest days of MB build quality, or do they represent a fine family vehicle to cart the nearest and dearest around and still have the ability to engage in autobahn frivolities?

Thanks in advance.

Great cars, rust aside

Ok there's a few niggles, but overall nothing major. Knowing the sort of cars you've owned before, the servicing side will be fine (discs/plugs are quite expensive) - it's just the rust that spoils most of them :(

Having said that - there are some pretty good ones about. If you can find one that's had all the rust properly sorted, they're a lot of car for the money. I saw a fellow member's car on Saturday that was pretty much immaculate - one of the best W210s I've seen in ages! (I think it's had a full going over by MB with new wings etc) Can't believe it didn't sell for the very reasonable amount that he was asking when it was on the market.

So they'll either be rusty, or will have had a load of work done to them. But you're getting a decent chunk of AMG car for not a lot money.

Having used our CE as a very handy family wagon for nearly 2 years now, I can happily vouch for the 2 door coupe format being kiddie compatible - for one anyway. I was looking at your CL last night and thinking it looks very similar in many ways to the CE (in crude terms).

Unless you just fancy a change in which case, which ever excuse can be made to stick to get some AMG action ;):D

Setanta,

Will has it spot on. Rust rust and more rust seems to be the norm.

Ok i admit to being a very very fussy buyer (esp re spec and colour) but i gave up looking for a nice one (regardless of budget) a few months ago.

I must have looked at around 10 only one of which i would have said was really good (and with hindsight i should have gone for) but it still needed 3 out of 4 arches done.

Birdman has a minter i believe.

Your CL looks very good value now, good luck

(edited to add, the 55's don't half shift though)

Cheap thrills, but prone to rust.

Consider also a C43, or better still the C43 estate that someone on here posted an ebay link to.

Rapid baby wagon...

Hmmm...thanks guys. The more I look at what other rubbish is fetching on the bay of e and elsewhere, the more I think I have rocks in my head for selling the CL. I have seen a lot and not just bias but not yet seen one better so very very reluctant to sell it.

Ade B, if you can do it with your coupe I can do it with mine...I think!

Of course, the lure of convincing the Minister for War and Finance that a second car is much more sensible than selling the CL would be perfect!

Buccal, you sound a but like me, although my focus is more on condition and service history rather than colour. That you were not able to find a decent one is of concern.

Nick, thanks - will look at the C43 also.

Is EDZ's still for sale? Looked good in the GTG pic

EDZ's (Leigh's) car is a superb example of an E55. The condition of the car is commensurate with a typical 60-70k miler, it's clearly been very well maintained and used on sensible motorway type journies.

If I wanted a W210 E55, I'd be in discussions with him for sure. Ticks all the main boxes for me - superb rust-free bodywork (bar one small blister on the bonnet), refurbed wheels + new tyres, facelift version, COMAND/phone kit/sunroof etc. Even the cluster displays are good and the interior is mint!

I'm not on commission, but I was surprised how clean it was. Considering he wasn't asking for a lot of cash when it was advertised it seems crazy that it didn't sell. All I can assume is that people were put off by the mileage and didn't bother going to view it - seems a shame as mileage isn't the killer for W210s, it's rust :wallbash:

Thanks Will

Managed to get a "we should get an E55" slipped into some sentence about 1/2 hr ago about cleaning the kitchen and there has been some sort of approval. It may have been a nod. It may have been her looking down at the table and back up again.....I will declare it a nod *grin*

Congrats with the new arrival.
E55 will definately be big enough for baby at the back and a huge pram in the boot!

Generally the car is pretty bullet proof. Biggest issue as most have said is rust.

I can vouch for EDZ E55 - He handed me the key on Saturday. She looks and drives like a dream.

Thanks for all the kind comments guys, perhaps I'd better keep it if it's that good!;)

I also got a ride in E55 and its a very, very desirable car indeed! In fact I did get some insurance quotes today but was surpised by how much they want, Ive full NCb, no points ever, fairly low risk area, and was quoted over £600 with a minumum £600 excess!! Im 40 and would have thought itd be a bit less. Still giving it serious thought though!

Mate:Maybe it`s just meant to bee, that`s why it did not sell.It will be hard to find another as clean as yours.

Simon, I'm 41 and managed to get a modern classic policy, 5000 limited mileage, agreed value, Fully Comp, loan car & legal cover etc, £100 excess and I do not have any NCB, £426 with Haggerty.:bannana:

They don't take NCB into account on a classic policy.

Thats much better!, didnt think such a new car could go on a calssic policy (Lancaster whom Im with for the coupe wouldnt wuote for anything less than 10 years old), will give them a try tommorrow, cheers!

I would say that my previous E55 AMG (W210)a 2000 model V reg at the time and a year old when I bought it was one of the best cars I ever owned . Fast stable good looking, supberb performance a full 5 seater with a large boot. All in all a great family car that can go like a bullit when the mood takes - oh, & stops as wel as it accelerates :) I actually never had any rust issues on mine. I only got rid because I traded it in for an Aston :). I would thoroughly recommend one - rust free of course. As others have said, brakes ( disks & pads ) can be pricey as are tyres - but well worth it IMHO. Oh, & wifey loved it too !

Hi Simon,

Try Peter Best insurance for a 'modern classic' policy. My CLK55 came in at just over £300/PA and I'm relatively young by comparison.
