Starting to think about a replacement for our trusty 2010 Mondeo which we have owned from new. Family duties. Tip runs. Two boys (5 and 11). It has been brilliant and totally reliable.

But it's time to replace it.

I'm considering a brand new GLC. Probably a diesel 220. AMG Line. Probably with air suspension.

Unusually for me, it will be leased. Why? Well, I've a feeling the tide is about to turn and in 4-5 years electric will have come of age. So a 48 month lease is the plan and then buy the next car outright.

I don't need a lecture on leasing / buying outright etc. I work for a leasing company so I know the products inside out and back to front.

I'm interested in people's experiences of the GLC. Tyre skipping still an issue? Quality good? I've read mixed reviews. Wife wants an X3...

Other contenders are:

Disco Sport (quality is poor, naff interior)
X3 (as above)
Q5 (just been replaced with new model I think)
XC60

Over to you!

Thanks guys.

I’m amazed that MB UK still offers this model here.
XC60 is strong contender, maybe even the best one, from your list.

Last year I tried the Q5, XC60 and the GLC prior to deciding to go one step up in terms of refinement (and size!) with a GLE.
You will have to try them to see which one floats your boat, but none of them are bad cars.
The Audi is the most refined and complete car, the Volvo is better than most would give it credit for and the GLC my wife found just a bit to low after Land and Range Rovers....
Your criteria will be different:D

Just a thought but your boys will be 9 and 15 by the time this vehicle goes back (scary I know!), I’d personally look at the next size up but appreciate everyone’s different.

Probably the best proportioned Mercedes 4x4 they make, they look great.

Only issue is that you hear very little from owners through the summer but then there are numerous threads once the weather turns about the crabbing. I know some people are ok with that fault/characteristic but it certainly seems to take the shine off for a lot of owners.

Bizarrely, even though the system is used in other models, the issue seems more pronounced in the GLC.

Pound for pound I’d go for the XC60 out of that lot (the XC90 isn’t much more iirc) but if you simply want the German prestige tag I’d go for the X3.

Thanks all!

Looked at C Class estate today. Was impressed. Think that would do us too. Wife liked it too. Might look at one of those instead. AMG line probably a 220d.

Thoughts on those??

rear leg room is horrendous and facelift w205 is due out any time soon so theyll be happy to shift all old stock at good prices tho

My view entirely (and I'm not keen on SUVs as a rule). But the tyre skipping thing seems to be fairly significant.

I really like our S205 and when I've been sat in the back have found it comfortable with enough leg room. It's worth noting that if you go with premium plus, yes you get the Burmester sound system and COMAND, but you lose some boot space.

Youngest daughter recently looked at the GLC (husband has a C220 Sport Line Estate), XC60, Mazda CX thingy.

She went with an approved (lightly) used X3. She likes it a lot. I had a drive recently and it is a nice car, but I prefer the GLC styling and interior. I've not driven a GLC though.

Make sure you have a ride in one, I have a W204 C220 CDI AMG sport edition and it sits very low as it has lowered suspension. It has much less interior space than what I’m used to and having a pano roof you get even less head room. Tall adults would have their knees round their ears in the back seat! Could work for kids unless they grow too big. I like the car personally but it’s lack of space does take some getting used to

I’ve got a w205 and my father has a Glc coupe. Leg room is adequate in both and comfortable too but the GLC does have slightly more room, although I do have the Amg performance seats in mine so might be a contributing factor.
My father has the Glc 43 , it feels a bit more chunky and solid than the w205 and drives very well. He had the all season tyres fitted from new , you do get a bit of skipping in the winter when you first drive the car from cold, it was only when I pulled out of his drive that I noticed it, then didn’t get any after that. It wouldn’t put me off buying one though as it’s an excellent car all round.

The interior space is much improved on the w205 , I found a big difference between my current W205 and my last W204. Some of it Placebo with the wide sloping centre stack but without doubt it has more room for all passengers particularly in the rear.

I had the GLC 220d AMG for 2 days as a loan car and have a permanent w205 C350e Saloon. My kids are 6 & 4, there was loads more room in the back as the kids could actually to there own belt seats which they cant do in the saloon.

I would defiantly get one with Air Suspension as that was the only negative. Boot was massive compared to the c350e but then the battery eats into the space. I always thought SUV's were pointless but I loved it and the kids too.

We recently bought a W205 220. Looked at a Q3,Q5, GLC as well.
Must admit, loved the Q5. And I did like the GLC as well. That was the one I wanted.
Ended up with a c class saloon. Boot was bigger then expected.
Not getting a GLC was a bit of the wife’s decision due to her worrying about hitting it in the tight car park at work and the thought of spending £40k on a car for my kids to destroy it really put me off!!
Bought a 64 plate C220 amg line premium plus, and love it! Maybe the estate may of been more practical.....but I’m over it. Absolutely love it! And so does the wife.

My old man has been looking at something to replace his 2013 X3.

He has tried them all.

Q5 he said was solid to drive, but really, really boring, he had it for a 24 hour test drive and took it back after an hour or so, said the cabin was just so dull as well.

XC60 he liked, but said it felt a bit numb to drive as well.

Disco Sport he really liked, but is put off but the fact it is a Land Rover product and was worried about long term ownership costs, he wants this as his last car that he can own for years.
But said he could easily see himself in one of those.

GLC, said the interior felt a bit blingy for him, but overall really liked the car and the overall design, though it rode well, one of the best for feel and comfort, but none of them felt anywhere near as nice as his X3.

He has said he would like to try a GLC, but I think he would rather a used model in case he doesn't get on with it.

he has left it that he will pay off the X3 in Jan and then decide, he asked JBD on here to keep an eye out on used GLCs, but I think he is thinking run his X3 till the spring next year and see if the used pries slide a bit, right now a used one makes little sense, only about £4-5k less for a 2 year old 30k mile car than a new one discounted.
Reckon that will change in another 12 months.

Oh, he really loved the new X3 too, he did say that was the most comfy, most dynamic and definitely the best tech, he just fancies a change, and thought the GLC was good enough in most areas to really fancy having a go with one.

Hi, I ‘owned’ a GLC coupe 250d for around 3 weeks and decided it wasn’t for me

The positives were, I think one of the best looking SUV’s, decent power, one of the most comfortable vehicles I’ve owned, decent driving position, decent economy, good ride, great interior layout

The negatives....the crabbing, I couldn’t live with it, the M.D. offered to put a set of all season tyres anytime foc when the original wore out, supposed to cure the issue but tyre wear would certainly be an issue. Boot space is limited on the coupe version. My model didn’t have Apple iplay and it didn’t have the command system which I’ve always had in previous mercs. The biggest worry for me would be the resale value on the models affected by the crabbing (only affects rhd models) and when they find the cure and introduce it on a facelift model, who will want the tyre eating version?

Hope that helps

New X3 is getting very good reviews.

My missus has a VW Tiguan (one of the last of the previous model) and it's interesting reading the forum that due to VW lead-times being all over the place and GLC being offered with hefty discounts, some potential new Tiguan buyers are looking at GLC, but still ordering Tiguans!

Food for thought there guys so thanks! I still fancy a GLC but need to get comfortable with the crabbing. It’s a lease car so residuals not of interest to me. As long as I can get on with the crabbing, that’s all that matters. Will report back in due course once test driven!
