Now, of late, wheezy (M271 Engine) has been reporting a cylinder temperature of around 70C instead of her usual 80C or so.

Reading up on here, it looks like ambient temperature is the likely problem, but what other faults are possible causes?

I hasten to add that the engine runs fine and economy doesn't appear to be impaired but I am concerned about possible long term damage etc.

Ta!

our 200 k is reading the same , but with low mpg as well ( 19 to 23 mpg ) , i have a new stat ordered and will have it on saturday , cost €38 + vat from MB .

Fitting the stat is no big deal.

Temp should be between 80-90.

Better MPG and furnace-like heater to follow.

Hmmm, mine is on the low side then....

Furnace like heater... not in a CLK :D

My C270 seems to sit around 40 - 50 most of time, it does get to 80 if driven on a long journey but since we had this cold weather it takes forever to get to 80 and my mpg is lower too. Might i need a thermostat too???

You will definitely need a thermostat, that is too low. You re mpg should get better as well.

Im gonna change the stat on saturday or monday , il let you know how it goes , and then il be able to give yea some pointers on fitting

I changed the stat on the car this eve . It was very easy,
theres a black plastic housing bolted to the front of the engine with a coolent hose attached , this is the stst housing . When i removed the old stat i could see where the seal had failed .
So now i have b
great heater temp and hope fully better mpg

I did this on my C180 recently, should be the same on a CLK 200? If, like me, you don't intend to change the coolant then syphon as much as possible out of the expansion tank (push your syphon hose down the outlet as far as possible) and the actual thermostat replacement is a 'dry' job. Unbolt the housing, change the stat (about £18 from ECP), refit the housing and refill with the coolant you syphoned off at the ouset. About 20 minutes in all.

Hi All,

Bit the bullet and spent £41 at the dealer for a new thermostat, seals and 1.5l of anti-freeze.

Diving straight in, no need to remove the air pipe or front engine cover, I used an E10 female Torx socket to release the bolts (2 off) retaining the cover letting the coolant errr flush itself to the ground :)

Taking the cover off required wiggling the cover while pulling back, quite easy though and no need for an additional tool to ease out the cover.

Replaced both seals, (O-ring and square profiled seal)

Installed the thermostat and cover.

Tightened up the cover, being sensitive to the covers plastickness and the fact that the bolts were only nipped tight on removal.

Filled the coolant expansion tank with 1.5l of anti-freeze and a 100ml or so of distilled water.

Quick test drive - no leaks but temp now sits at 90C when warmed up as opposed the 80 or so when I bought the car.

Shows that the thermostat was on its way out even then....
