Tesco Fuel Again?

Similar last winter wasn't it?

But why is it always Tesco's?

In fairness I had the same with ASDA. Wife filled up her C240 with £75 ASDA Petrol. Car cut out withing 2 miles of the Fill Up Point. Trailor to Wright Tech = Contaminated fuel, Filter and pump siezed. Both were jammed with what looked like Treacle. Not a cheap fix.

ASDA refused to accept that they were in any way to blame. A week later stories started to appear in local press with owners having similar experiences to ours. ASDA still refused to accept any responsibility.

In short we received no help from ASDA and will never buy their fuel again or use their shops again.

I would have thought that a few customers with proofs of purchase could have raised small claims actions and taken ASDA to court , citing each others claims and press coverage as corroboration - as a civil action I'm sure the judge would have agreed the balance of probability was that the fuel was at fault and ordered them to pay up .

One instance proves nothing ( unless an engineer's report confirms it , along with a fuel sample analysis ) , two instances are a big coincidence , and three or more would be damning .

My 430 runs like Steptoe's horse after a curry if I use Tesco ordinary unleaded. It has to be their Momentum if I use their filling stations.
Mrs Ringway overheard one of their petrol station employees saying that her car runs rough on their fuel.

I spoke with an RAC mechanic a few weeks ago and he said that Tesco buy the dregs of refinements and sell it without any additives added whatsoever.

My 430 runs fine on any ordinary grade unleaded from a dedicated supplier - BP, Shell, Texaco etc.

Don,t use supermarket fuel.

I don't use anything else , unless running low : my local BP want 107.9 for ordinary unleaded and Tesco just down the road are 99.7 for the same or 104.9 for Momentum super unleaded .

While one reads these stories every so often , the chances of getting contaminated fuel are minuscule .

My SL idles poorly on ordinary unleaded ( from any supplier ) although there is no noticeable difference when driving , but idles smoothly on super unleaded as well as getting better mileage .

My other cars have never shown any difference and always got the cheap stuff .

Good old tescos fuel.. Happened to me last year, haven't used it since, nectar points soon build up using BP!!

I dont use supermarket fuel, why drive/own a Mercedes and worry about a few pence?

Without or less additives very possibly but ''dregs'', I find that hard to accept.

Also too, considering that supermarkets have 44% of the retail fuels market it's inevitable that they will have the finger pointed at them rightly or wrongly, if suspected of supplying substandard fuel.

Because it's the nearest to my home. I'd probably be a bit more selective if I had a high powered car, but my C350's 306 horses seem more than happy with Tesco's cheapest plonk. I've tried many others including top grades and haven't noticed any difference.

So if everything else being equal which 2 cars if you were looking to buy would you have given the choice?

One which had always been used on Premium fuel? or the other which had always been run on Supermarket fuel?

Or wouldn't it make any difference to you?

Having a Mercedes which lasts for years with enduring value and reliability is one of the best bargains for the economy minded , especially when other makes need to be Fixed Or Repaired Daily , or give Lots Of Trouble , Usually Serious :D

Even if I could know this , which is unlikely , it wouldn't make a jot of difference to me , other than the one having been run only on branded fuel being more likely to have been run to the dregs or completely out as the driver passed lots of supermarket stations in an effort to find his approved one !

fair enough, although i always make sure mines never low enough so i have to use the closest filling station to my whereabouts.

Also id say someone who chooses to pay that little bit extra probably looks after his car mechanically better too when it comes to replacement parts.

If only the above were true

I have never had any problems with Tesco diesel and myself SWMBO have covered approx. 250k miles over the last 10 years. Also I have not tried the premium brands often enough to notice if there is a difference.
But from what I have read the differences are minimal.
