W211 E320cdi elegance saloon. Gone at last
Is it possible to replace the totally rubbish SatNav system with one that works and can mate up to the command screen ? I would rather use the Garmin that I dumped after three months of head banging frustration than the Mercedes Nav system. It annoys me to get the trusty TomTom out when my W211 has an alleged system fitted.
If anyone were to ask me what to put on the options list when purchasing a new Merc I would definitely tell them not to waste their money on the nav. Get one from Halfrauds it will get you where you want to go.:wallbash:

No, it's not possible without spending mega bucks.

I don't know what year your vehicle is, but you can't expect a 10 year old command to compete with a 2yr old garmin.

Just use a stand alone solution which will be far cheaper and easier to use.

Agreed. I never used the comand nav in my CLS as my "Mio" was so much better!

Don't miss comand at all (SLK doesn't have it).

Do you use Becker?

It doesn't compete with a 10 year old TomTom. That's what I'm complaining
about.

In what respect?
They both use the same mapping company and the comand uses a higher quality GPS aerial and speed pickup from the vehicle so is a more accurate system.
The only difference would be a preference thing. TomTom user interface is idiot proof but their touchscreens have always been somewhat lacking.

In the respect of the inability to accept a full postcode and house number and the sheer amount of phaffing about to attempt to program where you want to go. Also the way it attempts to show directions on the poor excuse for a map. As I have said before its as much use a handbrake on a canoe.

Whatever you do, you MUST affix your TomTom to a bracket or mount below the windscreen level.

TomTom's aren't allowed to be suckered onto the windscreen of an MB .

It's the law.

Do the likes of Tom Tom and Garmin have provision for an antenna? I have a Road Angel that needs one inside the MB (CL) something in the screen stops the signal.

Fair enough, you do get used to the user interface.
Relying on the post code alone, gets many tomtom users in trouble.
I quite like the directions in my cluster to be honest.
I leave the comand screen to show the overview map.
Muting the audio to announce directions through a clear sound system is nice as well.

Admittedly it's not a perfect system, but considering it's age, I think it does ok.

The system in the lastest cars is actually quite impressive. I'd specify it.

some do have the option to have an external antenna as the heat reflective coating of some windscreens impairs the GPS signal.

Only to the windscreen of a 1.2 Vauxhall Nova with an exhaust pipe diameter that could cope with the flow from an oil well and emitting as much light as a small star :D

That's the only good thing IMO. I'll stick to TomTom when I need directions.
