Visited the DVLA in Sheffield on the 21st of November (One week ago) to retain my private plate and within two days I received my new MOT & tax disc and have today received the V5 with the original plate!

It normally takes about 3 weeks in my experience, so they must either be getting better at processing or they are having a quiet month.

Either way I'm very happy with their service. :D

I've had to use them a couple of times lately (moved house, assigned plates etc) and it's generally been under a week for each request.

I visited the Glasgow office, put my reg on there and then as well as changing the tax class ( from disabled ) despite dafty here forgetting to take insurance certificate. They were very efficient and only a few days passed before V5c came through. Excellent service.

Portsmouth DVLA excellent they did my plate transfer there and then.
I took all the old documents in and left with all the new ones. personally I couldn't beleive how rude some people are when they are trying to sort out issues with their car documents if your polite to them they are really helpful in return

Be warned when sending licences in for updates, take a few colour copies first as they have a habit of returning with missing entitlements. Happened to me a few years ago after a change of address my PCV entitlement disappeared. Got it back with the aid of a photocopy. A few bikers got caught out and ended up having to sit a test again. Might be ok now but best to be safe than sorry.
