The wife used the car yesterday and rang to say its spluttering and keeps cutting out at traffic lights, she managed to get it to her work and I rang the recovery hotline.......ran out 2 months ago  so now the cars stuck at her work.

Car will start but won't tick over and can't be driven, it cuts out before I have time to get in gear.

Hold the revs at 2000rpm and they drop as in the vid.

Hold the revs at 3000rpm and its fine.

Anything I can try before I somehow get it recovered to my indie?

I know the C32 can't be towed for more than a mile but what about the bus?? my indie is about 5 miles away from where the car is.

Thanks in advance

A low speed tow to your Indie should be OK. Ask him for advice on that though.

Better to get him to sort other than us second guessing I'm thinking.

That looks like an air leak problem.

The W124 can be towed any distance, the c32 30 miles at 30mph.

I know you can't tow automatics without the engine running because of lack of oil flow but if you can keep it running the oil pump will still be turning, should be ok? If not take the propshaft off.

722.4 gearboxes have a secondary oil pump driven off the output shaft, so towing, or even bump starting is possible.

Thanks all, i'll tow it in later then.

Check for dislodged vacuum pipes before towing it, it might be a simple fix.

Hmm. It's a 220 so check for a sticky throttle plate caused by gumming. A squirt of carb cleaner can stop issues, but I still think it's a vacuum leak.

I have to say, that video does highlight just how rough Mercedes 4 pot petrols are.:o

No obvious pipes loose or split that I could see.

Managed to drive it in the end using some left foot braking to keep the revs up, drives fine once its cruising. Find out tomorrow whats up with it.

It was the mass air flow sensor.

Glad you got it sorted and simply too. I wonder if there is any preventative maintenance for this other than carry a spare with you for once in a blue moon use?

It is probably the original sensor, so fitting one every 18 years shouldn't be an issue.

I used to have an Astra Turbo, and lots of forum members did indeed alays keep a spare in their car, such was te frequency of failure!!
