The amount of morons on the motorways last night was genuinely staggering!

Every other weekend I pick up my eldest daughter from her mum so it's a 260 mile round trip along part of the M25 and M4. Usually it's busy but the number of divs on the road is at a minimum. I can only assume half term traffic was to blame but it was a constant stream of people doing really stupid things last night.

The lane discipline was worse than ever, literally lane 2-4 full of cars with lane 1 almost completely unused. People driving far too close together causing sudden braking and unnecessary slowing down.

Usually I just sit back, relax and cruise but some of these idiots were unavoidable. For example I'm doing 70mph and pass a car in lane 1, middle lane hogger in lane 2 so I indicate and move out to pass. This women then indicates and moves into lane 3 as I'm catching up with her as she's doing maybe 60. There is literally nothing ahead of her, nothing to her left but she forces me to brake purely to sit in lane 3 for literally no reason! I ended up moving back across and ended up going past her on the left whilst she sits in lane 3. Utterly beggars belief.

It just seemed that a lot of people who don't normally use the motorways were out in great numbers last night. The M25 is bad anyway but the idiocy seemed to off the scale last night.

...and breathe! haha

Highways agency should use the overhead gantries to remind the numpties we drive in lane 1 unless overtaking. That new law especially for middle lane hoggers is a waste of time as there are no plod around to see the awful driving.

I have though the exact same thing! How hard would it be to use the signage to display, 'Keep Left Unless Overtaking'. Even if it made one in twenty people think about it, it might alleviate some of the idiocy.

I mean I know the M25 is bad enough, I sail past people in lane 2 or 3 whilst I'm in lane 1 at 70mph but it was staggering last night. M4 was just a sea of brake lights as people sat in lanes 2 and 3 less than a cars length apart. I've been doing that drive for 12 months now, every other weekend and I was shocked by it last night.

This is why I never use cruise control.

Was on the M25 also yesterday at around 1715 and completely agree with OP. ABsolute d...heads.

Fortunately I can usually get mine on for a good percentage of my journey, at least for the last 60 miles or so. No chance at all last night unless I was prepared to do 50mph the whole time and just let everyone past.

Glad it wasn't just me being in a particularly irritable mood! haha.

I was on there a little before you, probably 16:00 but was still a collection of utter idiots!

When I see these inconsiderate drivers I just get ahead and away from them as soon as possible and try not to let their poor observation skill or laziness bother me. Not worth it youll only wind yourself up

some people are not as confident on the road to be fair so stick to their lane

It is just as bad up here in Scotland especially since most of the M8 is 2 lane!

No it isn't.

Scotland's motorways are relatively benign compared with the busy areas such as M25 and around Birmingham and Manchester.

2 lanes don't require much lane discipline compared with 4 lanes with different variations on merging on/off at each successive interchange with a lot more HGVs trying to make progress - and sections with smart lanes and variable speed limits and gantry cameras.

I travelled from Middleton into Manchester this afternoon, the road is a bus lane on the left active from 7-10am and 4-6pm and a standard lane on the right. This was at 2.30pm and all the lemmings were nose to tail in the right lane. I just went down the inside of all of them........morons

Trouble is that just as you escape one pocket utter morons, there’s another one.

It was utterly inescapable last night.

I do four journeys of 130 miles every other weekend and I’m usually exactly that, relaxed and keep out the way. Last night, literally surrounded by then!

Also yesterday with the good weather it tempted all sorts out on the road ,so you had that ,half term and a Sunday recipe for the perfect drive home not.

I used to do a similar trip, every other weekend, M25, M4 into London to my sons father. Some weekends the journey would take just a couple of hours round trip, other times it's been 3 hours to get there!

I don't miss doing that journey.

MB World to home yesterday wasn't too bad, I just sat in the slow lane and let them get on with it!

Sounds like a very familiar drive to mine and potentially similar circumstances. M25 junction 7-15 then M4 to junction 18, then back again. Sadly my ex (despite me paying her fuel) told me it's too much wear and tear on her 5 year old car so no long does any driving. I'll just use my 16 year old Merc in stead haha.

Undertaking is an offence...........just saying :D

Overtaking on the left is an offence, true. Passing an idiot in lane 2, 3 or 4 whilst I drive at the speed limit in lane 1 isn't though. ;)

I am coming to the opinion (well I’ve really gone past the point). There is no “standard” of driving that people aspire to anymore. I was brought up (eeeeeh when I were a lad) to look I driving as a set of skills that you took pride in. You wanted other road users to admire your abilities and believe that they should work towards your standards.

Now it’s just a bundle. First over the line with the rear view mirror piled high with motoring carnage. Gc-v bHhhvv
