Thinking about tinting my windows

Right then.

I'm thinking about tinting the windows on the CLK.

The car is Jasper Blue and has the light blue Avantgarde Spec Window Tints already.

I've been quoted a very good price by a company we've used in glasgow for aver 6 years.

I don't want it "gangsta" black.

I've asked for a slightly deeper blue tint as i thought it would look quite nice with the blue bodywork.

Has anyone got any thoughts on a possible alternative shade?

I don't want it to be illegal.

I just wanted it a little bit darker, one of the advantages of this car over Mrs B's C class is the amazing visibility due to the lack of a door pillar.

I just feel that sometimes when driving i get a lot of glare through the sides and a deeper tint seems to be the way to go instead of wearing shades all the time!

Comments welcome.

regards,

KJ

Personal preference but the standard blue tint is quite noticeable IMHO - not because of the amount it obscures, but because blue stands out so much. I think a deeper blue tint might actually attract more attention, as it could even look like a "mirror" finish.

Even if it's legal it's probably best not increase the likelihood of a roadside check by having something that stands out so much, so maybe a very light smoke tint would be more subtle?

I'm sure it will look good whichever way you go.

im afraid if your windows are already tinted from factory, even the lightest shade of tint WILL make it illegal.

If your willing to accept this then go for it, id go for the light smoke which in the daylight looks like near factory tint, but as daylight fades looks darker.

Virtually any form of tinting on your tinted windows will make them illegal.

Your car will be deemed as unroadworthy, and your insurance company may not insure you.

The police could also place a PG9 your vehicle, meaning it is unroadworthy , and to have this removed, you will have to remove the tint, then have your vehicle mot inspected.

I had tints on my ML when I bought it, but after being warned by a VOSA inspector, the front windows tints have been removed.

This is the official line - it's all to do with the amount of light that your tinted windows will let through. I'd imagine the (tinting) company will be able to advise on the shade % by placing a sample on your window(s) & measuring - though you may be exempt if you're a professional footballer :)

This is true, i had limo black on all but the windscreen on an old car - got pulled three times because of it and assured them i asked for "the darkest legal tint" from a recognised local expert.

Always got away with it, probably even easier in a merc!

As said, only place i can see it being a problem is at MOT's or with registered testers who might be more aware and/or able to test the tints.

If you do decide to go for it take some pictures! Im doing mine soon, about a 35% black tint all round :)

They are much tighter on window tinting now, the police have a meter to measure the tint percentage on the spot.

IMO tints now days are asking for trouble from the Police and they only suit limos. I have seen plenty of cars that have a lighter front tint BUT darker rear tint to comply with legislations BUT look ridiculous.

Quite agree. Looks better (IMO) to have a lighter legal tint all round than the "van look".

Shame it's gotten tighter on measuring.... although it was dangerous - i had to roll down my windows at junctions if i was driving at night :D

And I agree, whatever tint you go for it should be the same all round!

I used to have tints on my old car (was already on when I bought it) and it was lethal. I didn't see a lorry on a roundabout at night and went to pull out but luckily my other half stopped me. If I had been on my own I may not be here now! The tints were literally blacked out though all round, made it impossible to reverse in the dark and because I live in the lanes proved quite difficult! Had to wind down windows at junctions and roundabouts!

I sold the car in the end, and will probably not bother getting tints on this car.....

My mother has tints from the factory on her Freelander and was pulled by police and made to take it off before they would let her drive away!! Not happy!

Tints look good but just not for me anymore, too scared since my near accident!
