This is going to sound like a really dumb question but why does the throttle pedal on my 2001 w210 click regularly when depressed/released etc.? Is it supposed to and if so for what purpose??

Yes, the car is an auto (sorry), 47 k miles but seems to click a lot and as a result does not rev up unnecessarily which is what I presume what would happen with the kickdown switch?? P.S. What is the kickdown switch for? I have seen it mentioned here before - I am sure whatever it's purpose it is not the sound Im referring to - the pedal does not need to be depressed fully to get the clicking sound.

You hit the kickdown button when the pedal is fully depressed - press it down a bit harder and you'll feel a give - that's the kickdown. Depending on your engine you will notice a greater or lesser effect of hitting the kickdown. In mine its fun
You need to test this on a fairly safe and clear stretch of road as you will already have the pedal to the floor as it is - and you'll be about to floor it just that little bit more
From what you describe though I'm not sure it's the kickdown as that doesn't "click" it's a feeling - unmistakeable but there nonetheless.
Is your click just a sound you hear as you depress the throttle but offers no resistance to the travel of the pedal? If so it could be the spring that needs a bit of lubricating - I've had this on cars in the past. Annoying but easily fixed.

Why not try pressing the throttle with the engine off?
You can also look to see the kickdown switch. If you get down inside the footwell, it is just behind the throttle pedal (you will see what we mean when you move the throttle pedal towards it!)
