Thud Noise from rear of the vehicle upon gear change - 1996 Mercedes A124 E220

A few years ago, the gearchanges on mine suddenly became very harsh. It turned out that a vacuum(?) pipe of some sort that runs between the engine and gearbox, whose purpose is to smooth changes, had become disconnected. I can't for the life of me remember its proper name I'm afraid, but once reconnected, gearchanges became silky smooth again. Mine is a 3.2 (4-speed box) though - whether or not it has the same gearbox as yours I have no idea.

Sounds like vacuum from inlet to box. Yes, certainly needs to be connected.
