Moving the gear lever out of park has now started to make a thudding noise, but only when it is paroled nose up on a slope.
Does this indicate a low fluid level or is it more sinister?

The answer is simple...when parking on a slope apply the parking brake to take the weight of the car before putting the shifter into park, If you are using the trans to hold the car that is the problem and could cause damage to the box.

The noise is the parking pawl returning under duress... do as black c320 says, it will be fine, would take hundreds of goes to damage it...
