Does anyone use tiscali?

I'm about to change ISP from AOL on a speed & price basis and tiscali seem to be good on both.

Anyone changed to them and have any comments - good or bad.

I've been with Tiscali for about 5 years and never had a problem at all. I've just upgraded to the 8mb with phone and land line package, so looking forward to making a few pounds saving!

Been with Tiscali for years and based on their prices and service I've had no inclination to change. :)

same as above, they used to be a complete shambles when they first took over LineOne but we've had no problems at all for the past 5 or 6 years

Used to be with them back in 56k dial-up days, but left after they "lost" my account for three months in a row. These days I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. They consistently rate as one of the lowest on thinkbroadband's comparisons, even when compared with AOL and BT Broadband.

This is a comparison of AOL, BT Broadband, o2, PlusNet, Tiscali and Zen. The results speak for themselves.

I'm glad to see that there are people out there who are having a good experience with them, but after having seen so many of my clients have issues and problems with them, and seeing those problems run on for long periods of time, I have no inclination to use them and I would never, ever recommend them. Even PlusNet had problems with them when they were reselling some Tiscali broadband services.

Been with them for years. Very good helpline service even if it is from abroad. No complaints so hope it's not going to change.

I heard somewhere that broadband will eventually be a totally free service. I know Gordon Brown has mentioned that he wants everyone in the UK to be on the high speed service - dont know when.

So i can only presume that specialist ISPs who offer nothing else, would one day have no revenue stream if it all goes free.

On that basis i would choose a phone provider - and also because most broadband comes down the phone line.

Incidentally, I have completely free braodband with my Orange mobile contract - 500 mins for £15 +VAT a month.

If your exchange is ADSL2 capable, I would suggest O2.

You'll then get an up to 20Mb service for just £9.79 (if you have either a contract or pay-as-you-go O2 mobile), or £14.68 otherwise.

For their 8Mb service, the costs are £7.34 or £12.23.

Yep 02 are excellent. Look at the customer satisfaction poles, they get top marks.

Talk Talk are incredibally BAD - AVOID!

I was with AOL since they took over from compuserve and ditched them a few years ago. They were appalling and you have trouble removing all trace of them from your system.

I'm in the exact position, AOL have throttled my speed certain times of the day, especially P2P software

I dumped Tiscali after they were unable to give me a package upgrade. BT said my line would support a higher speed, Tiscali's engineers said my line would support a higher speed, but after 3 months of phone calls & emails they weren't able to change my account (or even explain what the problem was).

Speed? What is that ? I dream of a 1 mb connection....

I can only get around 1.5.

I was with pipex(taken over by tiscali). I tried to set up a tiscali account & after 3mths & many calls they still could not get things sorted out/ changed over, so I changed to BT & was transferred within about 10 days- excellent service & a fairly good package with talk plan/tv/broadband, but obviously not the very cheapest, although good speed & free support line, unlike tiscali.
If you are in cable area, Virgin is supposed to be one of the best/fastest.
Would NOT recommend tiscali!

Yep, been with them for years, £15 per month for up to 8 meg, never had a problem. Does what it says on the tin :D

I've heard very good things about o2 broadband. I have their mobile broadband which I find to be quite excellent. I rate o2 highly as a company - I've been with them since pre-BT days (remember Cellnet?) and have found their support to be excellent. UK-based, short waiting times and on the whole, they know what they're talking about and are good at resolving problems - even quite complicated ones that take a lot of explaining!

(I'm currently with PlusNet broadband - owned by BT but thankfully not run by them. The tech support guys generally know what they're talking about and as they're owned by BT they have direct access to BT's engineers so problems can be resolved quickly! They did have a VERY bad patch over a year ago but seem to have mostly resolved those problems. They are also very good at keeping you informed about problems with their services, and their service status, which a lot of ISPs refuse to do even if you phone up.)

If you are in cable area, Virgin is supposed to be one of the best/fastest.

Virgin's 50Mbps is currently the fastest in the UK and, due to the inherent limitations of twisted-pair cable (as used by xDSL services), is a speed that cannot practicably be matched by the competition. Virgin's cable service on the other hand is delivered over fibre optic and co-axial cable, enabling even higher speed services in future. I suspect this is partly why the government have recently been talking about a national fibre-optica overlay network incorporating Fibre-To-The Home (FTTH) connectivity. Gigabit speeds would then be commonplace.
