Torx drivers

I have a pretty decent set of tools for doing basic maintenance and repairs most bought many years ago and most decent brand names. We have a VW in the family and it is covered in these torx head screws / bolts. I have a set of torx head screwdrivers and some allen key type devices but really need a set of torx drivers for the socket set ratchets.
NOw to the questions - can anyone recommend a reasonably decent set of these and also do I need the ones marked T40 (just to take one size as an example) or Tx40 ( I think the difference is that the TX is a security feature with a pin in the head? - quite how this is security if everyone buys the security sockets beats the life out of me but thats another subject) - and finally what are the most common sizes?

Thanks a lot

Snap-on and Stahlwille make the best ones and it pays to buy the best as Torqs that get chewed up are troublesome to get out, take a look on Ebay there are often sets on there by both companys

In addition to Snap-on and Stahlwille also look at Teng and Britool. For automotive the popular sizes are probably T20 through to T70. Don't worry about Tx or T as generally it depends on the brand on what they have used. The one with the pin in the centre is tamperproof torx and you may not need those. Also you need to decide what drive size you want to go for, probably 1/2" or 3/8" drive (1/4" drive versions are also available, but you probably don't need those).

I got the impression that the tamperproof ones with the pin in the middle were labelled Tx - is this not correct?

Not exactly. Most of the tamperproof ones I have seen are TTX, but saying that I've also seen them as TX and just T. I've also seen the normal ones labeled T or TX. Pretty ambiguous really.

I'd say Halfords Professional ones are good aswell. However i was a bit dissapointed with the screwdriver set (i got free with some motor oil)... the handle rubber came away from the plastic when tightening a tight screw. I didnt bother to take back as I have 3 of these free sets.... from buying oil. The actual drive bit of the screwdriver is good though and doesnt get chewed up (so far)

i dont think they are on offer anymore. I've only opended 1 packet

I like the halfords pro range of spanners but the ratchets died on the first day, took them back, got another set (we were in kirkcudbright in scotland and halfords was in Dumfries which wasnt a short drive) which also died, and we were not being nasty with them, just undoing m6-m10 stainless bolts in mild steel which had only been done up 2 weeks before so not rusted in, not happy really, the guys here swear by Snap on, I think it may have just been a bad batch as I have some halfords stuff at home and its been ok for the home mechanic

In those days I made a living at taking apart and (mostly) putting other peoples' cars back together, we used to wonder why there was any real need for more than a half-dozen sizes of fasteners, and two or three wrenches for them.

its unfortunate that car manufactures dont just say to their designers `heres a small selection of fasteners you will be using`, most people just use their favourite fastener and when the design team may consist of thousands of people (sub suppliers included) in different countries thats a lot of different fasteners to contend with, most of the stuff I design uses M6 allen heads, but then I used to use Charmilles machinery and thats the clamping system on them,

The ones i use at work, as trucks like cars are covered in them are some cheap mickey mouse ones and i have had them for a few years and use them on air guns, breaker bars way to large and they are still good:) .

I have loads of snap on clobber but sometimes i wonder why:rolleyes:

I have some halfords spanners at home and they are pretty good.

Unles you are going to use them seriously i would go with the halfords idea reasonable tools for a fair price.

My lovely tool box never been this clean again, box and the tools are worth more than mine and the wifes car put together:D
