Tow bar on an r230 sl?

Even if technically possible it wouldn't be legal. Cars registered from 1st Aug 1998 onwards have to be EC 'type approved' for towing, which I'm sure the R230 isn't. If you check the VIN plate under the bonnet there will be no maximum 'gross train weight' (car plus trailer) given. That means it's not approved to tow, and fitting a towbar (whether you used it or not) would be illegal.

Go on Thule website and Saris website. On both you put in your car model and it tells which model fits your car... How's that?
