Hi folks. I have to get a tow bar for my 1996 C180 (W202) and have no idea what will fit it. Halfords says their "universal" one fits everything, another place says £150 for one, another £108 for a GENUINE C180 tow bar plus bolts....................HELP!!! And I don't need electrics for a trailer.

Cheers.

John

Thanks for that :)

If you can afford it, buy a detachable, it looks much neater when not towing.

Hi John,

I suspect that what you saw in Halfords might have been a universal towball that would fit most kinds of towbar, rather than a complete towbar that would fit any car. I think it was in 1997 or 1998 that type approval for towbars was introduced, meaning that each model of car has to have a towbar specifically designed and tested for that model. Before that it was legal - if not always practical or sensible - to basically drill a couple of holes in the back of your car and bolt on a towbar.

And I think you will need electrics, even for a small trailer.

As mentioned above, I have also used Towsure, and would be happy to recommend them.

Cheers,
Pete

I didn't know Halfords did towbars ? The big one near me closed its workshop down years ago (it's now a BathStore) . Even if they did I wouldn't let them fit mine.

The only time I let Halfords assemble something I purchased they got it 100% wrong. They put the front wheel on my 3 year olds tricycle the wrong way around so the safety ratchet wouldn't engage if a chubby little leg got caught in the pedals and as a result when the kid pedalled instead of forward motion you got just a ratcheting noise.

I left it that way. he's still got it (never wore out) He's 16 now :D

Perhaps electrics not needed as a replacement towbar ??, anyway, e bay the way to go, some will supply tow bar without electrics.
One for my ML270, Witter bar was £82.00 delivered
